브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= LG유플러스는 일본 대표 콘텐츠 전문기업 ‘WOWOW’가 제작한 인기 오리지널 콘텐츠 VOD를 자사 IPTV 서비스 U+tv에 독점으로 제공한다고 27일 밝혔다.
1991년 위성방송으로 개국한 WOWOW는 ‘영화 같은 드라마’를 모토로 ‘드라마W’, ‘WOWOW 필름즈’ 브랜드로 영화와 드라마를 자체 제작해왔으며, 글로벌 종합 콘텐츠그룹 HBO에 비견돼 왔다. 2021년에는 ‘WOWOW 온디맨드’를 론칭하는 등 일본을 대표하는 미디어 엔터테인먼트 기업으로 거듭났으며, 최근 동명의 한국영화를 리메이크한 ‘끝까지 간다’ 등 다수의 영화를 제작해 콘텐츠 마니아들의 주목을 받고 있다.
LG유플러스가 U+tv에 제공하는 WOWOW의 오리지널 콘텐츠는 △드라마 ‘하얀거탑’을 통해 일본 국민배우로 불리는 카라사와 토시아키 주연 ‘픽서 시리즈’ △WOWOW 간판 범죄수사물 ‘살인분석반 시리즈’ 전편 △일본 최고의 베스트셀러 작가 이케이도 준 원작 ‘샤일록의 아이들’, ‘하늘을 나는 타이어’ 등 약 250여 편이다. 또한, 내년 일본에서 방영할 WOWOW의 최신작도 한국 시청자들을 위해 동시방영을 추진할 계획이다.
앞서 LG유플러스는 지난 9월 북유럽 대표 콘텐츠 스트리밍 플랫폼 비아플레이의 ‘노르딕 누아르’ 영화·드라마를 국내 최초이자 독점으로 공개한 바 있다. LG유플러스는 이어 WOWOW의 새로운 라인업을 소개하는 등 콘텐츠 다양성 확보를 위해 국내에 잘 알려지지 않은 해외 콘텐츠 그룹의 VOD를 소싱하는데 주력할 계획이다.
LG유플러스가 선보이는 WOWOW와 비아플레이의 독점 콘텐츠는 U+tv 뿐만 아니라 U+tv 모바일에서도 시청할 수 있다.
