윤석열 대통령이 26일 "내년부터 첨단 바이오 분야에 R&D(연구·개발) 투자를 대폭 확대할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 충북 청주시 동부창고에서 '첨단바이오 중심에 서다, 충북' 주제로 열린 스물네 번째 국민과 함께하는 민생토론회 모두 발언에서 "글로벌 첨단 바이오 시장 규모가 2021년 기준 2조불에서 2035년 4조불(한화 약 5200조)까지 확대된다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "선진국들이 앞다퉈 첨단 바이오 선점에 나서는 만큼 무한 기회와 엄청난 시장이 있는 첨단 바이오 산업 도약을 위해 더욱 속도를 내야 한다"며 "여러 다자회의 참석 때마다 각국 정상들이 국가 미래 전략기술로 첨단 바이오를 꼽았고, 지난해 4월 미 국빈방문 때 만난 MIT 석학들도 미래를 바꿀 '게임체인저'로 첨단 바이오를 꼽고 있다"고 강조했다.
또 "지금까지 전통적 바이오 기술을 소수 서구 선진국들이 지배해 왔지만 AI·디지털이 융합된 첨단 바이오로 대전환이 이뤄지면서 큰 기회 문이 열리고 있다"며 "우리가 세계 최고 수준 인재와 양질 의료 데이터를 보유하고 있고 세계 어느 나라보다 발 빠르게 디지털 강국으로 전환한 기술·경험이 있어 그간 다져온 바이오 역량에 잘 접목한다면 첨단 바이오 시대를 이끄는 퍼스트 무버로 확실히 도약할 수 있다"고 강조했다.
이어 "석유화학 기반 소재산업을 바이오 기반으로 전환해 다른 산업 혁신·경쟁력을 이끌고 기후변화·식량부족·감염병같이 인류가 직면한 공동 난제도 첨단 바이오를 통해 해결해 나가겠다"며 "2020년 기준 국내 바이오산업 생산규모가 43조대로 2035년까지 200조 시대를 열게 기반을 다지겠다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 "많은 전문가들은 팬데믹이 다시 올 수밖에 없다 전망하고 있다"며 "넥스트 팬데믹에 대비키 위해 백신 기술 주권을 지켜낼 mRNA(메신저 리보핵산) 백신 기술을 확보할 것이며 혁신·도전적 연구는 물론 신진 연구자가 글로벌 연구자로 성장할 수 있게 전폭 지원할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
