신문사 발행인(. publisher)은 대다수 신문사 오너(사주)이니, 기자 수 보다는 적을 것이다.
필자는 1997년 5월에 '주간현대'를 창간, 매체의 발행인이 됐다. 그후 '사건의 내막' '브레이크뉴스(www.breaknews.com)' 발행인이 됐다.
원래 기자였으니, 발행인 신분으로 글쓰기를 계속해왔다. 그 이유를 소개하려 한다.
지난 2003년, 브레이크뉴스를 발행하기 시작한 후 지금까지도 칼럼+기사 등을 써왔다. 2024년 5월6일까지 브레이크뉴스에 등재된, 필자 이름의 칼럼+기사 수가 5,994건에 달한다. 쉼 없이, 줄기차게 글을 써온 결과이다.
처음에는 '발행인' 신분으로 글을 써오는 게 쭈볏거리기도 했다. 왜냐? '발행인' 직함으로 글을 쓰는 사람이 희귀했기 때문이다. 그런데 인터넷 매체 수가 1만1천개를 상회하면서, 발행인들이 글쓰기에 나선 이들이 많아졌다. 매체의 발행인이니, 칼럼이나 기사를 쓰는 게 당연한 일이다.
아마, 필자는 매체의 발행인 신분으로 한국에서 가장 많은 칼럼+기사를 쓴 사람일 것이다. 이런 입장에서, 매체 발행인들의 글쓰기를 응원한다.

필자는 사무실 책상 한 모퉁이에 아래와 같은 4개 사항을 메모해 놓고, 자주 쳐다보며, 글의 중요성을 내가 나에게 세뇌 시킨다.

3.글은 세상과 자신을 구한다.
