브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= LG유플러스는 시각장애인의 디지털 정보격차 해소를 위해 한국시각장애인연합회에 점자정보단말기를 기증했다고 17일 밝혔다.
점자정보단말기는 시각장애인이 점자나 음성으로 디지털 파일들을 이용할 수 있도록 제작된 일종의 노트북이다. 이 단말기를 통해 시각장애인도 비장애인과 동일하게 학습, 업무, 게임 등 다양한 활동을 할 수 있다. 단, 전문적인 장비인 만큼 수백만원의 고가여서 많은 시각장애인들이 활용하기 어려운 상황이다.
이로 인한 정보접근성의 취약함으로 시각장애인의 디지털 정보격차가 벌어지고 있다. 한국지능정보사회진흥원이 발간한 ‘2023 디지털정보격차 실태조사 보고서’에 따르면 시각장애인은 장애인 중에 모바일기기의 보유율(92.8%)이 가장 높지만, △정보 및 뉴스 검색 △이메일 △미디어 등 콘텐츠 서비스 이용률은 장애인 평균보다 낮은 수준이다.
LG유플러스는 이 같은 정보격차 해소에 기여하고자 농어촌 상생협력기금을 활용해 점자정보단말기 7대를 기증하게 됐다. 단말기 7대는 한시련의 강원, 경남, 전남, 전북, 충북 등 농어촌 지역 지회에 전달돼 오는 8월부터 시각장애인들이 지역사회의 일원으로 활동하도록 발굴 및 상담, 재활교육, 일상생활 훈련 및 정보화교육 등 다양한 활동에 활용될 수 있도록 지원할 예정이다. 이를 통해 농어촌 지역 시각장애인들의 정보격차 해소와 사회참여에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 LG유플러스는 기대하고 있다.
앞서 지난 4월 LG유플러스는 시각장애인의 스마트기기 사용환경 개선을 위해 기부금 5000만원을 전달했으며, 한시련은 이 기부금으로 260쪽 분량의 ICT 교육용 지도서를 제작해 전국지부와 복지관 등 220여 곳에서 시각장애인 대상 스마트기기 활용 교육을 진행하고 있다.
이 밖에도 LG유플러스는 광주세광학교 등 전국 맹학교 8곳에 점자책과 확대독서기, 노트북 등 ICT 기기를 지원하는 ‘U+희망도서관’ 사업과 임직원의 목소리로 음성도서를 만드는 ‘책 읽어주는 도서관’ 캠페인을 진행하는 등 시각장애인의 학습 기회 확대에 힘쓰고 있다.
한편, LG유플러스는 이달 20일 개최되는 ‘전국시각장애인지도자대회’에서 시각장애인의 정보접근성 향상의 공로로 감사패를 수상할 예정이다. 이번 대회를 통해 한시련은 변화하는 장애인 복지정책에 따라 시각장애인 지도자의 리더십과 전문성 향상을 중점으로 양질의 강의와 정보교류의 장을 제공한다.
