논문을 발표한 이진명 박사는 지난 6월14일 프랑스 보르도에서 개최된 CESNUR(Center for Studies of New Religions) 학회에서 넷플릭스 '나는 신이다'에서 방영된 기독교복음선교회(세칭 JMS) 내용의 부당성과 오류에 관한 연구논문을 발표, 가짜뉴스의 폐해를 지적했다.
이진명 박사가 발표한 논문 주제는 "가짜뉴스, 법정 재판, 미디어의 역할: 넷플릭스 '나는 신이다' 섭리교회의 경우에 대하여"이다. 이진명 박사는 이 논문에서 '나는 신이다'를 가짜뉴스라고 단정지었다. 그 이유는 “방송을 통해 발표된 것을 분석해 보면 짜깁기와 편집, 의도된 왜곡이 심각해 방송내용이 잘못된 방향으로 결론을 짓기 때문”이라고 했다. 이 논문에서는 '나는 신이다' 프로의 조작·편집 흔적을 제시했다.
이진명 박사가 이 프로의 조작 흔적으로 제시한 내용 중에는 "하나님께서 너를 이렇게 택한 거야. 하나님의 뜻이 있어서"라는 내용이 있는데, 넷플릭스에서는 “하나님의 뜻이 있어서”라는 말을 삭제하고 "하나님께서 너를 이렇게 택한 거야. 다른 사람 만지지 못하게 해. 이거….” 라는 내용으로 바꾸었다고 했다.
A방송 뉴스룸 육성파일에는 "다른 사람 만지지 마. 이거는. 이건 하나님 것이니까. 응?” 이때, 남자가 "네"라고 대답한 내용이 있는데 넷플릭스에는 남자가 대답하는 소리는 지우고 여자 신음소리를 넣었는데, 넷플릭스 파일에는 “쌌어?” 소리와 동시에 다른 남자 숨 쉬는 소리가 2번이나 연속 들린다.“면서 ”이는 성폭력 현장에 제3의 인물이 존재한다는 것을 의미하는데, 그것은 상식에 부합하지 않는다“고 지적했다.
또한 '나는 신이다'에서 “나 한 50번 정도 쌌다.”는 말이 나오는데, 이는 정명석 목사가 월명동 자연성전 내 약수물을 많이 먹고 건강해진 것을 얘기하는 것으로, 약수물을 먹고 50번 소변을 눌 정도로 많이 먹었다는 얘기였는데, 이를 섹스할 때 50번 사정했다는 것으로 조작 편집했음을 지적했다.
논문을 발표했던 이진명 박사는 언론의 잘못된 기사의 파급(波及) 문제를 지적했다. 그는 “한 개인의 생과 사를 결정짓게 할 뿐만 아니라, 사회 전체에 매우 큰 영향력을 발휘하게 된다. 잘못된 언론기사를 통한 개인과 단체가 입은 피해는 원상태로 복구되기 어려우며, 대중의 기억 속에는 잘못된 기사만이 자리잡고, 올바르게 교정된 사실은 묻혀버리게 된다"면서 ”가짜뉴스의 생산과 전파가 사회 전체에 미치는 파급력을 생각할 때 언론은 자극적인 보도의 관행을 버리고 진실만을 추구하는 올바른 정신으로 그 사회적 책임을 다해야 할 것“이라고 강조했다.
이진명 박사의 논문 발표 후 질의응답 시간에 “1만 명 강간” 문제도 거론됐다. 어떻게 한 사람이 1만명을 강간하겠느냐는 것이었다. 마시모 교수는 “모든 신종교들이 겪는 절차로써 어떤 종교는 수천 명 강간했다고 했다가 시간이 지날수록 계속 숫자가 줄어들다가 나중에는 아무 일 없게 된 경우도 있다”고 덧붙이기도 했다.

필자는 “나는 정명석을 만나러 간다”의 저자이다. 지난 2023년 9월25일 출간(대양미디어)돼, 교보문고 집계 베스트셀러 13위까지 올라가기도 했다. 이 책을 출간 이후 지난 2023년 11월18일 기독교복음선교회(JMS) 홍보실(경기도 광명시 한내일로 41 광명교회)과 단독 인터뷰를 가졌었다.
필자는 이 인터뷰에서 “지난 2023년 3월, 한 유명한 방송이 라디오를 통해 JMS 정명석 목사님 관련기사를 내보냈는데, 경천동지할 내용이 보도됐습니다. 이와 관련, A일보는 지난 3월14일자 보도기사에서 “K교수는 14일 OO라디오 ‘이슈 앤 피플’ 인터뷰에서 피해자 규모를 묻는 진행자의 말에 '평소 정명석이 했던 말이 ‘나는 1만명을 성적 구원을 통해 하늘의 애인으로 만드는 게 지상 목표’였다'라며 '즉 1만명을 성폭행하는 게 목표라고 본인 스스로 얘기를 해 왔고, 제가 그 사람의 행태를 관측해 온 결과로는 그 사람은 오로지 성폭행에 매진했던 사람이기 때문에 그 사람의 목표를 초과 달성하지 않았을까 생각한다'고 밝혔다”고 보도했습니다.”라고 설명하고 “남성 1명이 1만명 이상의 여성을 성폭행했다는 기사는 분명코 가짜-과장 보도였기 때문일 겁니다. 그 후, 언론의 왜곡 과장보도에 문제가 있다는 것을 추적했는데, 이런 기사들이 모아져 단행본이 됐습니다. 기자란, 사실을 기록하는 임무를 띤 사람들입니다. 이 책은 처음부터 끝까지가 사실기록입니다.”라고 피력했다.
이어 “세계 각국 곳곳에서 사실을 담지 않은, 매카시즘적 발언-폭로성 보도들이 종종 나오지만, 종국에는 흐지부지 없어지곤 합니다. 올 들어 한국사회의 지독한 사회문제 중의 하나로 떠올랐던 기독교복음선교회(세칭 JMS) 정명석 목사의 준(準) 강간 사건이, 필자의 눈에는 매카시즘적 사건으로 비쳐졌습니다. 이 사건이 왜 매카시즘적일까요?
