2026년 열리는 세종국제정원도시박람회’가 국제행사로 최종 승인됐다.
세종시에 따르면 기재부 국제행사 심사위원회는 지난 24일 심사를 갖고 세종국제정원도시박람회를 국제행사로 최종 승인했다
세종국제정원도시박람회는 시가 당초 목표한 국제행사 2등급을 받은 것으로 알려졌다.
2등급은 총사업비의 10∼20% 범위에서 국비를 지원받는다. 최종 국비 지원액은 기획재정부에서 별도 검토를 거친 후 결정되며 2025년도부터 예산에 반영된다.
이로써 2026년 세종국제정원도시박람회는 2012년 7월 세종시 출범 이후 처음으로 열리는 국제행사가 됐다.
특히 정부승인에 따라 박람회 사업비 재원에 국비를 담을 수 있게 돼 시 역점사업이자 신성장 동력인 ‘정원속의 도시, 세종’ 건설에 더욱 탄력이 붙을 전망이다.
시는 이번 국제행사 승인이 단순하게 박람회를 개최하겠다는 목표를 넘어 도시 전체를 정원화하는 정원도시박람회를 구상한 점이 주효했다고 봤다.
또 주무 부처인 산림청이 국제행사 적격 판단과 국제행사 승인 절차에서 설득과 논리 개발 등에 긴밀히 협조해 준 것이 큰 도움이 됐다.
시는 2026년 세종국제정원도시박람회가 공식적으로 국제행사로 승인된 만큼 남은 절차를 신속하게 추진할 방침이다.
우선 오는 9월 박람회조직위원회 출범을 위해 행정안전부와 인력 파견에 대한 협의를 조속히 마무리할 계획이다.
산림청과는 공동 개최의 역할과 지원 방안을 논의하고 박람회장으로 포함된 국립세종수목원을 비롯해 태안국제원예치유박람회 조직위와 구체적인 연계사업 등을 발굴해 박람회 개최 효과를 극대화할 예정이다.
또 도시 전체가 정원이 된다는 정원도시박람회 취지와 맞게 시 전역에서 다양하고 특색있는 정원을 지속 조성하고 시민 조경사를 양성할 계획이다.
최민호 시장은 “국제행사로 확정된 2027년 충청권 세계하계유니버시아드 대회와 함께 2년 연속 세계인이 방문하는 국제행사를 개최하게 되면서 국내외로 우리 시 위상을 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”며 “세종시 첫 국제행사의 성공개최를 위해 시정 역량을 집중하겠다”고 말했다.
한편, 2026 세종국제정원도시박람회는 2026년 4월 10일부터 5월 24일까지 45일간 세종중앙공원 일원에서 개최되며 국내외 관광객 180만 명이 방문할 것으로 전망된다.
박람회 개최로 경제적 파급 효과는 생산유발효과 3,910억 원, 부가가치유발효과 1,431억 원, 고용유발효과 3,364명이 발생할 것으로 기대된다.
