윤석열 대통령이 2일 파티 비롤 국제에너지기구(IEA) 사무총장을 접견하고 '정부가 추진 중인 무탄소에너지(CFE) 정책에 대한 지지에 감사를 표했다'고 대통령실이 전했다.
대통령실에 따르면 윤 대통령은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실에서 비롤 사무총장을 접견하고 지난해 9월 유엔총회서 제안한 '무탄소에너지(CFE) 이니셔티브'를 IEA가 지지해준 것에 감사 뜻을 전했다. 비롤 사무총장은 IEA가 4~6일까지 한국 정부와 부산에서 공동 개최하는 '기후산업국제박람회' 참석차 방한했다.
앞서 지난해 9월 윤 대통령은 유엔총회에서 탄소중립 목표 달성을 앞당기기 위한 현실적 대안으로 원전·수소·재생에너지 등 고효율 CFE를 폭넓게 활용하는 'CFE 이니셔티브'를 제안한 바 있다.
윤 대통령은 "지구 곳곳서 일어나고 있는 이상기온 현상·지정학적 위험에너지 안보 위기 등 복합 위험 대처를 위해 IEA가 비롤 사무총장 리더십 하에 청정에너지 역할을 강조해 왔다"고 평했다.
그러면서 "대한민국도 청정에너지 기술 활용도를 높여 첨단 제조업 경쟁력·환경을 성공적으로 조화시켜 왔다"며 "대한민국의 이런 경험이 제조업을 시작하려는 개발도상국에 좋은 길잡이가 될 수 있는 만큼 앞으로 IEA와 함께 모범사례들을 많이 만들어 나가자"고 밝혔다.
또 올해 '기후산업국제박람회'를 한국 정부와 에너지 분야 대표적 국제기구 IEA가 공동 개최케 된 것에 대해서도 환영했다.
비롤 사무총장은 "한국 CFE 이니셔티브는 에너지 안보를 높이면서 기후 목표 달성에 있어서도 모범적 리더십을 보여주고 있다"며 "이는 모두에게 안전하고 저렴하며 지속 가능한 에너지를 제공하려는 IEA 접근 방식과도 잘 부합한다"고 말했다.
또 "원자력이 기후 위기 대응·에너지 안보 확보에 기여하는 이점이 많아 한국 포함 캐나다·중국·프랑스·인도·일본·폴란드·미국·영국 등 점점 더 많은 국가 사이에서 원전 중요성이 다시 주목받고 있다"며 "정해진 시간·예산에 맞춰 원자로를 건설하고 SMR 등 혁신 기술을 선도하는 한국 성과를 높이 평가하고 싶다"고 말했다.
접견에 앞서 윤 대통령은 비롤 사무총장에게 무탄소 에너지 확산에 기여하고 대한민국과 IEA 협력 강화를 위해 노력한 공로를 인정해 수교훈장 광화장을 수여했다. 수교훈장 광화장은 국권 신장·우방과의 친선에 공헌이 뚜렷한 사람에게 수여하는 수교훈장 5등급 중 1등급이다.
