윤석열 대통령이 24일 재일본대한민국민단(민단)을 만나 "재일동포들이 일본에서 당당하게 활동할 수 있도록 한·일 간 우호 협력 관계를 지속 발전시켜 나가겠다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실 청사에서 재일민단 지도부를 초청해 간담회를 갖고 이같이 향후 한·일 관계 발전 의지를 표했다.
재일민단은 재일동포 권익 보호·법적 지위 향상을 위해 활동하는 대표적 동포 단체다. 이날 간담회는 양국 우호를 위해 노력해 온 민단 노고를 격려하고, 재일동포들 목소리에 귀기울이기 위해 마련됐다.
윤 대통령은 "한·일관계가 경색돼 있던 시기 재일동포들이 많은 어려움을 겪었다"며 "민단이 양국 관계에 버팀목 역할을 해줬다"고 감사 인사를 전했다.
그러면서 "미래지향적 한·일 관계를 열어나가고자 하는 정부 노력에 계속 함께해 달라'고 주문했다.
김이중 민단 중앙본부 단장은 "지난해 윤 대통령 방일을 계기로 한·일 관계가 개선돼 재일동포들에게 큰 힘이 됐다"고 화답했다.
이수원 민단 도쿄본부 단장은 "일본을 방문하는 한국인 방문자 수가 대폭 늘어난 것을 통해 한·일 양국 관계 개선을 실감하고 있다"고 했고, 임태수 민단 중앙본부 의장은 보다 많은 재외국민들이 선거에 참여할 수 있도록 사전 정보 제공·사전 등록 등 재외선거 제도 개선을 요청했다.
김명홍 민단 오사카본부 단장은 "내년 한·일 국교 정상화 60주년과 오사카 박람회 개최를 계기로 한·일 친선 교류가 더욱 활발히 진행되길 기원한다"고 말했다.
