필리핀을 국빈 방문한 윤석열 대통령이 6일(현지시간) 현지 동포들을 만나 "양국 관계를 새 차원으로 도약시키고자 한다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 저녁 부인 김건희 여사와 함께 필리핀 수도 마닐라 페닌슐라 호텔에서 열린 현지 동포 만찬 간담회에 참석해 격려사에서 "양국 관계 중심축이 돼 온 무역·투자 분야 경제협력을 더욱 강화하면서 공급망·인프라·에너지·방산같은 미래지향적 전략 분야로 협력 지평을 넓혀나갈 것"이라며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "양국 관계가 이렇게 발전하면 필리핀서 활동하시는 여러분께서도 여러 혜택·이점을 누리시게 될 것"이라며 "동포 여러분께서 한국인 자부심·긍지를 갖고 현지 사회서 더욱 활발히 활동하실 수 있도록 모국 정부가 적극 뒷받침 해드리겠다"고 약속했다.
또 "양국 수교 75주년을 맞는 이렇게 뜻깊은 해에 필리핀을 국빈 방문케 돼 매우 기쁘게 생각한다"며 "(필리핀은) 지난 1949년 아세안 최초 세계 5번째로 우리와 수교한 나라로 6·25전쟁 땐때 가장 먼저 가장 많은 병력을 아시아에서 파병해 자유 대한민국을 지키기 위해 함께 싸워준 고마운 친구"라고 평했다.
이어 "필리핀을 방문하는 외국인 4명 중 한 사람이 한국인이라 하며 작년 한 해만 우리 대한민국 국민 145만 명이 필리핀을 찾았다"며 "또 많은 필리핀 국민들이 K팝·K드라마를 즐기며 우리 문화·말에 굉장히 친숙하게 느끼고 있다"고 말했다.
더불어 "이렇게 양국 간 유대·우정이 돈독해지게 된 데엔 우리 동포 여러분들 역할이 매우 컸다"며 "한·필리핀 관계가 발전하는 과정에 동포여러분께서 늘 든든한 버팀목 되어주신 것에 대통령으로서 감사하게 생각한다"고 격려했다.
윤 대통령은 "따알 화산 폭발·슈퍼태풍 오데트·코로나 팬데믹같은 연이은 시련으로 오랜 시간 공들인 사업장·생활 터전을 떠나야만 했던 동포들도 많이 계셨다"며 "이렇게 어려운 상황 속에서도 동포 여러분께선 봉사활동·장학사업을 통해 필리핀 국민들과 따뜻한 손길을 나눠 오셨다"고 거듭 격려했다.
윤만영 필리핀 한인총연합회장은 환영사에서 "펜데믹으로 신음했던 지난 2년을 뒤로 하고 이제 새 도약을 준비하는 바로 이 시점에 대한민국 대통령님 내외분의 필리핀 국빈방문은 우리 대한민국과 필리핀 한인 동포사회가 함께 도약할 수 있는 큰 용기를 선물할 것"이라고 환영했다.
그러면서 "지난해 재외동포청을 신설해 재외동포를 끌어안아 주시고 재외동포 목소리에 귀 기울여주셨다"며 "우리 대한민국과 필리핀은 한국전쟁에서 자유·민주주의를 위해 나란히 싸운 혈맹 나라이기에 대통령님 이번 방문은 양국 간 우정을 더욱 돈독하게 할 수 있는 계기가 될 것"이라고 말했다.
