윤석열 대통령이 21일 데이비드 라미 영국 외교부 장관을 만나 북한의 우크라이나 전쟁 파병 등 러·북 군사 협력에 대한 공동 대응 방안을 논의했다고 대통령실이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실에서 라미 장관을 접견하고 한반도 안보 상황·북한 러시아 파병·러·북 협력 관련 정보를 공유하며 "영국·나토(NATO·북대서양조약기구)와 긴밀히 공조해나갈 것"이라고 밝혔다.
라미 장관은 "위조여권까지 제공하면서 북한 파병을 끌어들이는 러시아의 무모한 불법행위가 유럽 한국 안보를 심각하게 위협하고 있다"며 "영국은 이에 대응하기 위해 대한민국과 적극 협력할 것"이라고 말했다.
윤 대통령은 또 "한 영이 해군·공군 분야 방산 협력을 전략적으로 확충해나가자"고 했고 라미 장관은 동의 뜻을 보였다.
윤 대통령은 "지난 7월 나토 정상회의 계기로 이뤄진 한·영 정상회담 등 양국간 고위급 소통이 긴밀하게 이뤄지고 있다"며 "지난해 11월 국빈 방문시 양국이 합의한 '다우닝가 합의'에 따라 제반 분야에서 글로벌 전략적 동반자 협력을 더욱 강화해나가길 희망한다"고 말했다.
이에 라미 장관은 "영국이 지금 주요국들과의 관계를 새롭게 설정하고 있는 시점에 한국과는 새 관계 설정이 필요 없을 만큼 양국 관계가 완벽하다"며 "신임 장관으로서 적극 노력하겠다"고 화답했다.
또 "한국과 오커스(AUKUS·미국·영국·호주 안보동맹) 간 '필라Ⅱ' 차원에서 첨단 국방기술 협력이 강화되길 희망한다"고 덧붙였다.
