제19차 G20(주요 20개국) 정상회의 참석차 브라질을 방문한 윤석열 대통령이 19일(현지시간) 마타멜라 시릴 라마포사 남아프리카공화국 대통령과 정상회담을 갖고 "1992년 수교 이후 강화돼 온 양국 간 호혜적 파트너십을 계속 강화해 나가길 바란다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 G20 정상회의장 리우데자네이루 현대미술관 정상 라운지에서 라마포사 대통령과 한·남아공 정상회담을 갖고 "남아공이 아파르트헤이트(인종 차별 정책)종식 30주년을 맞는 역사적 올해 라마포사 대통령이 재선에 성공한 것을 축하한다"며 이같이 말했다.
양 정상은 글로벌 공급망 불안정 대응을 위해 핵심광물 분야 협력이 갈수록 중요해지고 있다는 점에 공감하고 이 분야 양국 간 협력 방안을 지속 모색해 나가기로 했다.
윤 대통령은 "한국이 내년 2월 남아공서 개최되는 '마이닝 인다바' 포럼 계기 '한·아프리카 핵심광물 대화' 출범을 준비 중"이라며 라마포사 대통령 관심을 요청했다.
또 "6·25전쟁 당시 남아공이 창공 치타로 불리는 공군 비행 부대를 파병해 한국 자유민주주의 수호를 위해 함께 싸워 준 데 감사하다"고 했다.
라마포사 대통령은 "한국의 성공적 경제 발전 경험이 남아공 포함 많은 나라들에 영감을 준다"며 "교역·투자·에너지 등 다양한 분야에서 양국 간 실질 협력을 더욱 강화해 나가길 바란다"고 했다.
