가스라이팅(Gaslighting)은 "매우 감정적이고 앞뒤 생각하지 않고 막 저질러 놓고 보는 사람"이 가장 잘 걸린다. 그 이유는 감정이 표출하는 그대로 해버리기 때문이고 자기가 내뿜는 감정이 솔직하고 정직하기 때문이다. 그런 사람에게 심리적인 조작을 통해 타인의 마음에 스스로에 대한 의심을 불러일으키고 현실감과 판단력을 잃게 만듦으로써 그 사람에게 지배력을 행사하는 것이 가능해진다. 왜냐면 앞뒤 제지 않고 감정에만 충실하니 매우 솔직한 이 단면 자체가 심리적인 조작을 가능하게 만드는 것이다. 반대로 가스라이팅을 당하기 매우 쉽지 않은 부류가 있다. 놀랍게도 사기꾼들이다.
사기꾼들은 정직하지 않고 순수하지 않기 때문에 이들을 심리적으로 가스라이팅 해봤자 오히려 사기꾼들은 가스라이터들을 이용해 그 압박에서 쉽게 빠져 나올 수 있다. 그리고 그들은 자신들 위에 누군가가 있는 것은 자신들의 이익을 위해서나 존재하고 있는 자들로 인식하기 때문에 가스라이팅을 오히려 역이용하는 영리한 자들도 존재하고 있다. 그래서 가스라이팅은 누구나 당할 수 있지만 사기꾼들한테는 오히려 통하지 않는다.
이게 개개인이 아닌 군중심리(Herd mentality)로 인한 단체 행동이라면 더더욱 막강한 효과를 가져온다. 절대다수일수록 이성적인 판단 같은 것은 필요없다. 누군가가 분노에 차서 성토하면 그 성토에 대해 공명현상(Resonance)이 나타나게 되는데 사람의 소리는 저마다 고유 주파수와 진동수를 갖고 있어서 그로 인해 감정에 전이되는 현상이 발생한다. 그렇게 되면 내가 왜 이것을 하는지도 인식 못하게 되고 남이 하는 행동에 똑같은 감정을 느껴 자동으로 군중심리에 의한 공명현상을 경험하게 된다.
이런건 선전(Propaganda), 선동(Incitement) 할 때 아주 잘 먹혀들어간다. 특히 어떠한 피해의식(Victim mentality)이 있을 때, 그리고 나의 목소리를 들어주지 않아서 생긴 불만, 그러면서 오랫동안 고조되고 쌓여왔던 것에 특수한 목적의 선전(Propaganda)과 선동(Incitement)으로 인한 가스라이팅(Gaslighting)에 불을 당길 때, 이는 모든 사람들이 상상할 수 있는 최악의 상황으로 치닫는다. 역대 역사에서 나타난 유럽의 혁명(Revolution)이라 하는 사건들 모두 그런 뒤틀려진 대중들의 심리상태에 가스라이팅(Gaslighting)을 주입했기 때문에 벌어졌다. 그리고 이 모두 대중들의 순간 감정 폭발에 의한 것이었다.
하지만 모두가 하나로 응집되어 폭발한 감정이 식을 때쯤에는 그 때부터 조금씩 그 사이에서 실익을 계산하던가, 혹은 각자의 처지에 따른 이기적인 생각들이 솟아나기 시작하고 그에 부합하지 않는 경우, 자기들끼리 싸우게 된다. 그러면서 또 다른 파당이 갈리고 그 파당끼리 싸우게 되면서 서서히 자멸해간다. 그러면서 이른바 "냄비근성"이 되어가는 것이다. 이런 유형들에 전 세계적으로 가장 가까운 국민이 바로 "대한민국 국민"이다.
나는 한국이 아닌 해외에서 살고 있기 때문에 재외동포로써 어쨌든 한국 사회에 있어 제3자의 눈으로 볼 수 밖에 없다. 3자의 눈으로써 가장 객관적으로 한국을 바라봤을 때 느끼는 것이 바로 이와 같은 모습이다. 3자의 입장으로 우리 대한민국 국민을 봤을 때 가장 냉철하지 못하고 객관적이지 못하며 그때그때 감정에 따라 처리하는 근시안적인 면모가 자주 보인다. 국민들에게 이런 가스라이팅을 하는 자들은 당연히 정치를 하는 자들이다. 국민들이 감정적이라는 스탈을 너무 잘 알고 있기에 가장 다루기도 쉽다는 것도 잘 알고 있다.
언론을 이용해 매스컴 몇 번 흔들어주고 팩트가 명확치 않는 가짜 뉴스들을 유튜브에 흘러 보내면 언론 신뢰도가 바닥인 상황에서 선전, 선동을 담당하는 가스라이터인 유튜버들을 따라 다닐 수밖에 없다. 국민들이 냉철하지 못하고 감정적일수록 통제 및 통치하기 쉬워진다. 그런 정치가들 중에 가장 무서운 자들은 권력을 쥐고 안 놓을려고 발악하는 자들이 아니라 2보 전진을 위한 1보 후퇴하는 자들이다. 이런 자들은 가장 교묘한 가스라이팅을 한다. 흔히 이걸 고사에 의하면 조삼모사(朝三暮四)를 국민을 상대로 잘 구사하는 자들이다. 이들은 일시적으로 폭발하는 국민 감정에 1보 후퇴하여 숨어있다가 2보 전진을 위해 국민 감정을 가스라이팅하여 흔들어 놓고 그 사이에 다시 제자리로 복귀한다. 냉철하지 못하고 감정적일수록 가장 이용가치가 높다.
