충청남도 금산군은 지난 4일 금산다락원 대공연장에서 6·25 전쟁에서 뛰어난 공적을 세운 고(故) 김영식 병장의 조카인 김승겸 씨에게 화랑무공훈장과 훈장증을 전달했다고 밝혔다.
화랑무공훈장은 전시 또는 이에 준하는 비상사태에서 전투에 참가해 두드러진 공로를 세운 이에게 수여되는 훈장이다.
김영식 병장은 1952년 10월 육군 8사단 10연대에 입대하여, 1953년 6월 28일 강원도 금화지구 전투에서 분대장으로서 부대를 이끌며 용맹하게 싸우는 등, 전공을 세운 것으로 전해졌다.
이번 훈장 수여는 국방부와 육군본부가 2019년부터 진행 중인 '6·25전쟁 무공훈장 찾아주기' 사업의 일환으로 이뤄졌다.
이 사업은 전쟁 당시 공로를 인정받았으나, 긴박한 전장 상황 등으로 인해 훈장을 받지 못한 유공자나 그 유가족을 찾아 훈장을 전달하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.
