마이트레야(Maitreya)는 미륵보살(彌勒菩薩)을 말하는 것으로 미륵사상은 카스트 제도로 인하여 고통받고 있던 수드라와 불가촉천민 계층에게서 자신들의 현세의 비참한 생활을 카르마의 업에게서 구원받기를 원하는 측면의 부처를 만들어낸 것으로 생각된다. 사실 인도는 마우리아 제국이 붕괴되고 쿠샨 왕조, 굽타 왕조로 이어지는 북왕조와 칼링가와 촐라, 안드라 왕조로 이어지는 남부의 3왕조의 시대가 존재했고 이 시기는 인도 역사에서 영국의 식민 지배기 다음으로 가장 암흑의 시대였던 것으로 평가된다.
굽타 왕조 이후에는 북방과 남방 인도 모두가 혼란의 시기를 겪었는데 이 시기 동안에 바이샤, 수드라, 불가촉천민 계층은 모두 엄청난 고통을 받고 있었다. 그런 혼란의 시기와 맞물려 나타난 것이 구세주 사상이다. 현 시대의 고통을 보살이 내려와 자신들을 구제해 줄것이라는 것이다. 미륵신상이 발달한 곳의 조건은 1) 빈부격차가 심각한 사회성 문제 2) 내전과 내란이 자주 발생해 정치적, 사회적 혼란이 격화된 상태 3) 상류층에서 잔혹한 착취에 대한 현세와 미래에 대한 불투명한 의지 상태에 놓였을 때 등으로 성립된다.
물론 예수나 부처, 공자, 무함마드가 탄생한 배경들을 보면 앞서 언급한 3가지 조건이 부합된 비합리적인 사회가 판치던 시대였다. 예수가 태어났을 때는 유태인들이 로마의 지배하에서 최악의 국면을 맞이하였던 때이고 자신들을 구해줄 메시아를 원했던 때였다. 석가가 태어났을 때는 아리아 인들이 북방 인도를 휩쓸면서 여러 개의 도시 국가 형태로 나뉘었던 대혼란의 시기였으며 공자가 태어났을 시기도 춘추시대의 대혼란 시기였다. 무함마드가 태어났을 때는 거대 아랍 상인 가문인 쿠라이시 가문과 기타 아라비아 반도 부족들의 대립이 극에 달했던 시기고 사산 왕조 페르시아와 시리아 같은 강대국이 아라비아 인들을 수탈했던 암담한 시기였다.
따라서 미륵의 개념은 이 4대 성인의 탄생 시기 대혼란과 맞먹지만 4대 성인과는 달리 현실세계에 있지 않은 가상의 세계에 무언가를 동경했다는 것에서 차이가 있다. 물론 예수를 메시아로 믿지 않고 여전히 메시아를 기다리는 유태인의 정신세계와 유사하지만 그와는 또 다른 부분이 있다. 유태인들은 앞으로의 미래의 불확실성을 언급하며 현세에 최선을 다하지만 미륵을 숭배하는 자들은 현세에 대한 불확실성을 언급하며 암담한 현실과 미래에서 탈출하길 바란다는 것에 있다. 아마 끝이 보이지 않는 내전, 무굴제국 시대까지 무려 1,500여년 동안 진행된 인도 대분열 시기는 그 고통을 떠안아야 했던 하층민들의 삶을 이해할 수있는 척도가 인도의 미륵신앙과 사상인 것이다.
코로나로 대혼란이 일어나고 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁과 더불어 세계 경제가 각종 인플레 등으로 파탄에 직면해 있는 이 암담한 시대에 제2의 마이트레야 사상이 도래할 가능성도 크다. 전쟁, 전염병 도래, 빈부격차로 인한 불확실한 미래 등은 역대 역사로 볼 때 한꺼번에 터지는 경우가 많기 때문이다. 그런 환란을 배경으로 수많은 메시아 종교, 즉 사이비 종교들이 탄생했고 그 불확실하고 암담한 현실을 반영하는 사회적 거울이 부조리한 종교들에 대한 헛된 믿음이 생성된다. 어쩌면 다른 사회적인 변혁을 요구하는 인류 특유의 진통일지도 모른다는 생각이 든다.
끝이 안보이는 현재의 암담함에 잠시나마 그 고통을 잊어보려는 심리적인 현상에서 만들어낸 형상들이 또 다시 생기지 않을까 싶다. 마이트레야, 즉 미륵사상과 사이비 종교의 공통점은 인류 사회가 소위 말세라 불리는 최악의 사회에 직면할 때 나타난다는 것이다.

Against the backdrop of such chaos, numerous messianic religions, or pseudo-religions, were born, and the social mirror that reflects that uncertain and gloomy reality creates vain beliefs about absurd religions. I think that perhaps this is the unique growing pains of humanity that demand another social transformation. I wonder if the images created from the psychological phenomenon of trying to forget the pain for a moment in the present darkness that has no end in sight will emerge again. The commonality between Maitreya, or Maitreya ideology, and pseudo-religions is that they appear when human society faces the worst society, the so-called end times.
