2015년 5월에 조지아의 친서방 대통령이었던 미하일 사카슈빌리가 우크라이나 오데사의 주지사로 부임하였다. 일국의 대통령을 지냈던 사람이 다른 나라의 일개 주지사가 된 것도 극히 이례적이지만, 친러 주민이 상당한 오데사 지사로 임명되었다는 점에서 러시아와 또 다른 갈등이 시작되었다. 결국 1년 반 만에 사퇴했는데, 러시아와의 갈등 때문이 아니라 우크라이나 내부의 부패를 견디지 못하고 사퇴하였다고 전해진다. 미하일 사카슈빌리와 페트로 포로셴코 대통령은 같은 친서방 성향이지만 국가 내부 문제에 대해서는 견해가 달라서 서로 원수가 되었다고 한다. 참고로 사카슈빌리와 포로센코는 키예프 세브첸코 대학 선후배 사이로 절친이었다.
이로 인하여 미하일 사카슈빌리는 같은 해 7월 우크라이나 국적을 박탈당하고 대통령에 의해 추방당했으나, 시간이 흐르자 재입국했다. 2017년 12월 들어 검찰이 그를 체포하려다 지지자들이 연행 검찰 차량 차문을 부수고 그를 구출하기까지 했다. 우크라이나 검찰 측은 반러, 친서방주의자이자 그런 이유로 주지사에 임명되었던 사카슈빌리가 러시아로 망명한 친러계 야누코비치 전 대통령에게서 자금을 받고 정권 찬탈 음모를 꾸몄다는 주장을 펼치고 있다. 그래서 사카슈빌리 지지자들은 사카슈빌리가 비난한 상대인 부패한 포로셴코 세력들이 입막음을 하고 부패청산을 위시로 반정부 활동을 하는 사카슈빌리를 희생양으로 삼으려고 했다는 주장이 크게 무게를 싣고 있다.
그로 인하여 사카슈빌리는 한 달 사이에 2차례나 체포되었다. 이 때문에 시간이 흐를수록 우크라이나 내에서 현임 대통령을 탄핵하라는 시위가 연일 이어지고 있다. 그럼에도 2018년 2월 우크라이나 정부는 다시 사카슈빌리를 폴란드로 추방하였고, 사카슈빌리는 처갓집이 있는 네덜란드로 가서 체류 신청을 한 상태이다. 한편, 조지아 법원은 사카슈빌리를 대통령 시절 직권남용혐의로 징역 3년을 선고했지만 조지아나 우크라이나로 돌아오지 않았다. 그는 폴란드를 경유해 우크라이나에 입국한 뒤 우크라이나 국적박탈은 무효라는 소송을 했다. 결국 2019년 7월 볼로디미르 젤렌스키 대통령이 그의 국적을 회복시키면서 우크라이나로 돌아오게 되었다.
2021년 10월에 조지아 지방선거를 앞두고 조지아에 입국했다가, 체포되었다. 사카슈빌리는 자신의 출신 정당을 지지하는 선거운동을 위해 방문하겠다고 했고, 실제로 입국할 것인가 논란이 많았는데 결국 실제로 입국해서 체포됐다. 체포 이후 사카슈빌리는 권력 남용 혐의를 인정받아 징역 6년을 선고받았다. 교도소에 수감된 후 단식투쟁을 전개하다가 건강 악화로 병원에 입원했다. 그러다가 2022년 2월에 의료 환경 개선을 목적으로 또 다시 단식투쟁을 했다가 3월 10일에 단식투쟁을 끝냈다. 한국의 어떤 자가 떠오르게 만드는 인물이기도 하다.
2023년 3월 13일, 사카슈빌리는 현재 형집행 정지를 받고 병원에 입원해 있었으며 수감 사이에 체중이 120Kg에서 무려 64Kg으로 빠졌다고 한다. 사카슈빌리의 건강 악화에 독극물이 역할을 했다는 의혹을 받고 있으며 당시 총리인 이라클리 가리바슈빌리(Irakli Garibashvili)가 이를 지시했다는 의혹을 갖고 있다. 참고로 가리바슈빌리 총리는 친러 인사다. 지금 이 엽기적인 자는 러시아 모스크바 외곽인 힘키 지역에 집도 샀다고 한다. 이 자야말로 서방에 붙었다 러시아에 붙었다하는 이중적인 인생이 아닐 수 없다. lukybaby7@gmail.com
