아시아기자협회는 3월4일 보도자료에서 “이날 오후 2시30분 서울 프레스센터에서 기자회견을 갖고 한국 민주주의 회복을 촉구하는 특별기자 회견을 가졌다”고 알렸다.

아시아기자협회는 이날 발표한 성명서에서 “일제 식민지와 6.25전쟁을 이겨내고 산업화, 민주화와 선진화를 동시에 성취하며 아시아의 모델국가로 우뚝 섰던 한국에서 벌어진 일련의 사태는 많은 실망을 안겨주었다”며 “한국이 어려운 국면을 조속히 극복해 종전보다 더욱 중요하고 선도적이며 모범적인 아시아 으뜸국가로서의 역할을 해주길 바란다”고 강조했다.
이어 “한국의 집권당과 거대야당은 당리당략을 벗어나 공동운명체로서 양보하고 역지사지하기 바란다”고 촉구했다.
이번 서명에는 회장 국가인 캄보디아를 비롯해 부회장 국가인 한국, 말레이시아, 스리랑카, 이란, 키르기스스탄과 일본, 베트남, 필리핀, 인도네시아, 싱가포르, 인도, 파키스탄, 방글라데시, 레바논, 아프가니스탄, 대만, 네팔, 홍콩, 몽골, 카타르, 라오스 등 아시아 30여개 국에서 진행하고 있다.
소팔 차이 회장 “타협 없이 민주주의는 불가능” 지적
질의응답을 통해 소팔 차이 회장은 "강한 의지와 관용, 타협 없이 민주주의는 불가능하다"며 "한국은 국민들과 여야 정치인들의 대화로 난국을 극복할 것으로 본다"고 말했다.
에디 수프랍토 부회장은 "언론은 자유와 전문성을 통해 민주주의와 법치주의 그리고 보편적인 사회 복지 향상에 기여해야 한다"고 말했다.
이날 회견 취재에 나선 응웬득탕 베트남통신사 서울 특파원은 "아자 회원들이 연대를 통해 한국 민주주의와 리더십 회복을 촉구한 게 매우 인상적이다"라고 말했다. 소팔 차이 회장은 30년 기자 경력 가운데 AP통신 및 로이터통신 프놈펜 특파원과 캄보디아기자협회 회장 등을 역임했다.

아시아기자협회 ‘한국 민주주의 회복 촉구’ 성명서(전문)
우리 아시아기자협회(이하 AJA) 회원들은 최근 한국에서 벌어지고 있는 계엄 및 탄핵 사태에 대해 다음과 같은 성명서를 발표한다. AJA는 우리의 성명서를 통해 한국의 혼란스런 상황이 조기에 수습되고 보다 진전된 민주주의와 탁월한 리더십으로 아시아 이웃 국가들의 롤모델이 돼주길 바라는 염원을 밝힌다.
아시아기자협회는 2004년 11월 창립 이후 지난 20년간 인류평화와 인권 보호를 바탕으로 아시아인의 관점을 통해 아시아의 사건들을 조명하고 보도하면서 저널리즘 발전에 일관된 역할을 해왔다.
이같은 시각에서 볼 때 이번 한국에서 벌어진 사태는 예상밖일 뿐 아니라 많은 실망을 안겨주었다. 이에 우리는 회원들의 총의를 모아 다음과 같은 성명서를 채택해 한국 사회에 전달한다. AJA는 이와 함께 앞으로도 회원국의 기자들이 한국의 민주주의 회복을 모니터 하는 한편 이를 촉구하고 응원하는 연대 서명을 이어갈 예정이다.
한국은 20세기 초반 이후 35년의 일제 식민지와 3년간의 6.25전쟁으로 경제적으로는 극빈과, 정치적으로는 독재체제에서 한동안 신음해야 했다. 하지만 한국은 인도의 시성 타고르가 일찍이 간파했듯이 ‘동방의 등불’로 지난 반세기 동안 산업화, 민주화와 선진화를 동시에 성취하며 아시아의 모델국가로 우뚝 섰다.
한국의 이같은 성장, 발전에는 뛰어난 정치경제 리더십과 함께 무엇보다 한국 국민들의 근면과 협동, 자주 정신과 높은 교육열 등이 뒷받침됐다는 것을 우리들은 우리 각국의 한국에 대한 정보를 취득함으로써 잘 알고 있다.
한국은 작년 12월 한강 작가가 노벨문학상을 수상하여 우리 아시아인들의 긍지를 한껏 높여줬다. 한국은 최근 수년간 문화, 스포츠 등 소프트 파워뿐 아니라 반도체와 의료분야에서도 K-를 앞세운 단어를 생성해내며 세계의 주목을 받고 있다.
우리 AJA 회원들은 한국이 현재의 어려운 국면을 조속히 극복해 종전보다 더 중요하고 선도적이며 모범적인 아시아의 으뜸국가로서의 역할을 해주길 바란다.
이에 우리는 다음 6개항을 촉구한다.
▲한국은 이같은 역사적이고 실증적인 국민들의 저력을 통해 지금 직면해 있는 계엄과 탄핵의 터널을 성공적으로 벗어나, K-민주주의를 아시아 각국과 나아가 전세계에 널리 전파하길 바란다.
▲한국 속담에 “비 온 뒤 땅이 더 굳는다”는 말처럼 이번 사태는 한국이 잠시 멈췄던 민주주의 열차를 재시동하기 위한 성장통이자 성숙통이라고 우리는 보고 있다. 이같은 통증을 온 국민의 단합으로 속히 멈춰주길 바란다.

Asia Journalists Association ‘Call for Restoration of Democracy in Korea’ Statement (Full Text)
We, the members of the Asia Journalists Association (hereinafter referred to as AJA), are announcing the following statement regarding the recent martial law and impeachment incidents in Korea. Through our statement, AJA expresses our hope that the chaotic situation in Korea will be resolved quickly and that it will become a role model for its Asian neighbors with more advanced democracy and excellent leadership.
Since its establishment in November 2004, the Asia Journalists Association has consistently played a role in the development of journalism by highlighting and reporting on Asian events from an Asian perspective based on the protection of human peace and human rights for the past 20 years.
From this perspective, the recent events in Korea were not only unexpected but also very disappointing. Therefore, we have adopted the following statement based on the consensus of our members and delivered it to Korean society. In addition, AJA plans to continue to monitor the restoration of democracy in Korea and to collect solidarity signatures to urge and support it.
Since the early 20th century, Korea suffered from extreme poverty economically and politically under a dictatorship for a while due to 35 years of Japanese colonial rule and the 3-year Korean War. However, as the Indian poet Tagore once observed, Korea has achieved industrialization, democratization, and advancement simultaneously over the past half century, standing tall as a model country in Asia.
We know well that Korea’s growth and development was supported by excellent political and economic leadership, as well as the diligence, cooperation, self-reliance, and high educational fervor of the Korean people, as we have learned from our information about Korea from each country.
Last December, Korean author Han Kang won the Nobel Prize in Literature, which greatly enhanced the pride of Asians. In recent years, Korea has been attracting the world’s attention by creating words that emphasize K- in the fields of semiconductors and medicine, as well as soft power in culture and sports.
We, AJA members, hope that Korea will quickly overcome the current difficult situation and play a more important, leading, and exemplary role as a leading Asian country than before.
Accordingly, we urge the following six items:
▲ We hope that Korea will successfully overcome the tunnel of martial law and impeachment that it is currently facing through the historical and empirical strength of its people, and spread K-democracy widely to Asian countries and the world.
▲Just as the Korean proverb says, “The ground becomes firmer after the rain,” we see this situation as growing pains and maturing pains for Korea to restart its democracy train that had been paused for a while. We hope that this pain will be quickly stopped by the unity of the entire nation.
▲We hope that Korea’s ruling party and the major opposition party will make concessions and empathize with others as a community of shared destiny, rather than focusing on partisan interests. Division leads to Korea’s regression, while unity leads to progress. We believe and support that Korea will spare no effort in demonstrating its people’s dynamism and strong unity in times of crisis.
▲We hope that Korea will quickly overcome this situation and, as a true leader in Asia, join forces with its Asian neighbors to solve their problems and contribute to world peace.
▲We support that the division and conflict that Korea is experiencing will be reborn as a “Korean-style democracy” of tolerance and coexistence through integration and communication.
