인생이란, 생각할수록 멋진 한 편의 드라마라고 생각된다.
나는 전라도 담양군의 농촌에서 태어난 이후, 가진 게 아무 것도 없는 존재였다. 1976년 군대를 제대하고, 탈(脫) 고향(故鄕)을 할 때, 어머니가 나의 손에 쥐어준 3,000원이 내 재화-재산(財産)의 전부였다.
그러하니, 맑스 자본론(資本論)에 나오는 언어에 빗대면, 나는 무산(無産) 대중(大衆)출신이었다. 프롤레타리아 (proletarian=오직, 나의 신체가 가진, 노동력만의 소유자)였다.
1976년 기자로 취업, 무산-대중으로 이 사회 속에서 구르고, 또 굴러 다녔다.
무산-대중의 삶이란, 말 그대로 곤고(困苦)함이 전부였다. 내 삶은, 그렇게 휴지 조각처럼 굴러 다녔다. 빈손으로, 떠돌아다녔다. 바람불면 먼지를 일으키며 굴러가는, 버려진 휴지와 같은, 허름한 존재였다.
대한민국은 치열한 자본주의 사회. 나는 이, 톱니바퀴처럼 맞물려 돌아가는 빈틈없는, 자본주의 사회라는 오밀조밀하게 짜여진, 체제의 틀 속에서 성공의 기회만을 노렸다.
1979년 4월말 나는 (주)펜 그리고 자유라는 회사를 차렸다. 아주 허름한 구옥(舊屋)이 사무실이었다. 박정희-전두환 체제를 비판하는 책들을 발간해온, 진보 출판사로 쓰였던 장소였다. 이곳에 둥지를 틀고, 그해 5월부터 시사주간신문 '주간현대(週間現代)를 발행하기 시작했다.
나의 주머니 속에 있었던 총 재화(財貨)는 겨우 1,000만 원 정도. 주간신문 창간 시기, 그 시기는 김영삼 정권 말기였다. 주간신문을 창간했던, 그 무렵, IMF(국제 구제금융) 사태가 터졌다. 나는 주저앉아 눈물을 흘렸다. 나의 눈앞에, 국가가 망해 들어가는 험악한 금융사태가 벌어졌었기 때문이다. 창간한 주간신문이 험악한 자본주의 체제 속에서, 도저히 살아남을 것 같지 않았다. 그 눈물, 짠 기운이 아주 독했다.
그런데 웬걸...그 반대 현상이 벌어졌다. IMF 사태로 해직된 사람들이 주간신문을 구매해주기 시작, 나의 주간신문이 한 순간에 스타 주간신문으로 자리를 잡게 됐다.
김대중 대통령이 취임하신 이후, 첫 청와대 인터뷰어의 영광도 안았었다.

운명의 여신이 드디어 나의 손을 잡아주었다. 나는 나를 무겁게 억누르고 있었던 '천정의 유리창'을 드디어 뚫었다. 억눌림의 '유리 천정'이 깨지는 소리를 경청할 수 있었다.
나는 한때 '일간 펜 그리고 자유(일간 펜)'라는 '종합 일간신문'을 발행했던 언론사 사주였다.
나는 한국형 자본주의에서 신문(주간신문+일간신문)을 팔아 자본을 축적, 지난 28년 간 신문사(주간현대-사건의 내막-일간 펜-브레이크뉴스) 사주(社主) 자리를 지켜왔다. 나는 대한민국이 기회의 나라임을 증명해 보인 것이다.
대한민국은 미국식 자본주의의 쇼 윈도우 국가이다. 자본주의란 국가에서 내가 소유할 수 있는 자본을 나름 축적해온, 내 과거의 추억(追憶)은 참으로 아름답다. 내가 일군, 아름답게 빛나는 업적(業績)이다.
대한민국은 나와 같은 무산-대중 출신에게도, 성공의 기회(機會)를 허락한, 기회의 나라였다.
나는 그 어디에도 비빌 언덕이 없었던, 프롤레타리아(무산-대중)출신이었음을 고백한다.
이 이야기는, 나만의, 내가 주인공인 한 편의 멋진 드라마이기도 하다.
