윤석열 대통령의 비상계엄 사태(2024.12.3)로 인해, 조기(早期) 대통령 선거 바람이 불고 있다. 이런 즈음 “전라도 지역은 왜 인물(無人物) 없는 지역으로 전락했나?”라고, 탄식하는 소리가 들려오기 시작했다.
김대중 전 대통령(1998.2-2003.2)은 백제 멸망(660년) 이후, 최초의 전라도 출신 집권자(執權者)였다. 백제 고토인 호남출신이 집권(執權)한 것은 1338년만의 일이었다. 그런데 전라도 출신 김대중 전 대통령 이후, 호남출신 정치인 가운데 대통령 선거에서 두각을 나타내지 못하고 있다.
김대중 정권은 임기 말에 재집권 구도를 짜면서, 영남출신인 노무현 후보에게 대통령 기회를 안겨줬다. 정치 공학적으로, 호남 유권자 수가 적으니, 대구-경북(TK)과의 대결에서 승리하려면 PK(부산-경남) 출신을 영입하는 게 유리하는데 논리에서 였을 것이다. 그 이후 문재인 후보를 지지한 것도 같은 맥락이랄 수 있다.
지난 대선 직전 민주당 당내 대통령 후보 경선에서는 호남출신 이낙연 후보를 전폭적으로 지지하지 않았다. 타지(他地) 출신인 이재명 후보를 지지, 그의 옹립을 도운 것.
최근, 조기(早期) 대선론이 돌출되면서 전라도 사람들에 대한 비판론(批判論)이 일기 시작했다. 전라도 유권자들은 이제부터라도 전라도 정치인물을 키워야 한다는 주장인 것.
한화갑 민주당 전 대표는 필자와 만난 자리에서 “전라도 유권자들은 이제부터라도 전라도 인물을 키워야 한다”면서 “전라도는 더 이상 경상도의 정치적인 식민지가 아니다“고 강조했다.
이재운 소설가는 이 현상에 대해 “전라도가 아직 소작인 트라우마를 벗지 못한 것 같다”면서 “안동 대지주 이재명 한 명한테 질질 끌려 다니며, 찬성하라면 찬성하고 반대하라면 반대하는 의원들조차 소작인 심리를 벗지 못하는지 이해할 수가 없다.”고 비꼬았다.
필자는 지난 3월13일, 전병헌(전 17-18-19대 3선의원, 충남 홍성 출신) 새미래민주당 대표와 점심을 함께 했다. 이 분은 1980-1990년대 발행됐던 평민당보의 편집국장(최연소-최장수. 1987-1993) 출신이다. 필자는 이 분을 지난 35년 간, 정치-언론이라는 공간(空間)에서, 오랜 기간 대면(對面)해온 사이. 문재인 정권 당시 초대 정무수석을 지냈고, 민주당 창당 60년 기념사업 추진위 위원장을 역임했다. 3선 의원을 지냈으니, 고도의 정치식견을 지닌, 정치 전문가인 셈이다.
충청도 홍성 출신인 전병헌 새미래민주당 대표는 전라도 사람들이 회심(回心=어떤 동기에 의하여 사람이 정신적 변화를 일으켜 다른 정신세계의 상태로 변하는 것)을 해야 한다고 촉구했다. 그는 “호남인들이 왜 경상도 출신(노무현-문재인-이재명 등) 정치인들을 선호하는지 아는가? 혼수감(여자가 시집갈 때 해가는 결혼선물)에 중독됐다. 영남 출신 정치인들이 주었던 선물들에 “중독됐다(이재명 제외함)”고 말했다. “호남 사람들이 호남 출신 정치 인물들을 키우지 않고 있다”고, 격(激)하게 비판했다.

전병헌 대표는 지난 2월28일 페이스북에 게재한 “수구좌파 이재명 세력에 의해 멸종위기에 있는 김대중의 호남정치 복원이 절실하다”라는 제목의 글에서 “김대중 정신을 계승하는 호남 정치의 마지막 불씨, 이낙연을 되살려야 한다.”고 주장했다.
또한 “오늘의 호남 정치 현실은 참담하다”면서 “가장 만만하고 하자 많은 윤석열 대통령에게, 본인 역시 흠결 투성이인 후보가 패배했다. 그런데도 패배의 책임을 문재인과 이낙연에게 돌려버렸다. 도대체 말도 안 되는 패배의 아쉬움과 분노를 당사자가 아닌 호남이 키운 이낙연에게 돌렸다. 말도 안 되는 가스라이팅에 성공하며 한국 민주정치의 정통인 호남정치를 처참하게 말살하고 있다”고 지적했다.
이어 “이재명 더불어민주당 대표는 호남 정치의 공백을 이용해 민주당을 사당화하고, 이재명 일극 체제를 완성해 놓았다. 범죄 리스크 방탄을 위해 대선까지도 방패로 삼으려 하고 있다. 지금의 민주당은 김대중의 DNA를 지우고, 통합진보당 동부연합과 한총련이 연합한 수구좌파 정당으로 변해버렸다”고 지적하고 “민주당과 함께한 호남 정치는 이제 멸종 위기에 놓여 있다. 이제는 호남인들이 각성해 이재명 일극 체제의 가스라이팅에서 벗어나야 한다. 한국정치의 중심, 김대중의 호남 정치를 복원시켜야 할 때다. 윤석열 탄핵 국면인 지금이야말로 광주·전남 시민들이 근본도, 호적도 없는 수구좌파들의 가스라이팅을 청산하고 벗어날 때”라고 강조했다.
전병헌 대표는 이 글에서 “확장력 없는 이재명에게 부질없이 막연한 기대를 할 것이 아니라, 김대중 정신을 계승하는 호남 정치의 마지막 불씨, 이낙연을 되살려야 한다. 윤석열과의 리턴 매치가 아니면 이재명은 필패 카드일 뿐이다. 모든 지표와 데이터가 입증해 주고 있다. 범죄 리스크가 지난 대선보다도 더 커지고 분명해진 이재명만을 고집하는 가짜 민주당의 실체를 제대로 깨달아 주기를 간절한 마음으로 기대한다”고 덧붙였다.
