필자가 발행인인 브레이크뉴스 4월1일자는 “트럼프 미국 대통령 "북한은 핵국가..김정은과 매우 중요한 대화할 것" 제목의 기사에서 ”도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 북한을 '핵 국가'라고, 핵 보유국으로 인정하는 듯한 발언을 하며 김정은 국무위원장과도 매우 좋은 관계를 유지하고 있다“라는 발언을 상세하게 보도했다.

트럼프 미 대통령은 김정은 북한의 국무위원장에 대해 "매우 영리한 사람이다, 그와 소통이 잘 되고 있다, 그것이 매우 중요하다"면서 "우리는 아마도 어느 시점엔 매우 중요한 문제(미북 수교 등)에 대해서 대화를 할 것"이라고 했다. 또 북한에 대해서도 "매우 큰 핵 국가"라는 표현을 쓰기도 했는데, 이는 사실상 북한을 핵 보유국으로 인정하는 발언이 아니냐는 해석이 나온다.
트럼프 미 대통령은 이에 앞서, 지난 1월 20일 취임식에서도 "김정은은 이제 핵 능력(nuclear power)을 가졌다"고 했고, 지난 3월13일 마르크 뤼터 북대서양조약기구(NATO·나토) 사무총장과 회담장에서도 "그가 '핵 파워'인 것은 분명하다(but certainly, he's a nuclear power)"라고, 말하기도 했다.
