한덕수 대통령 권한대행 국무총리와 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 미국의 상호관세 부과를 하루 앞둔 8일(현지시간) 무역·조선산업 협력·북핵 공조·방위비 분담금 문제 등을 논의했다.
한 권한대행은 이날 트럼프 대통령과의 첫 통화에서 액화천연가스(LNG) 수입확대 등 무역수지 개선 및 상호 관세 문제 해결 등을 주문한 반면 트럼프 대통령은 한국의 대미 무역 흑자·주한미군 방위비 분담금 문제 등에 대한 포괄적 협상 의지를 드러냈다.
한 대행은 "미국 신정부 하에서도 우리 외교안보 근간 한·미 동맹관계가 더욱 확대·강화해 나가길 희망한다"며 조선·LNG·무역 균형 등 관련해 미측과 한 차원 높은 협력 의지를 강조했다.
또 "북한 핵·미사일 능력 고도화 등 심화되는 안보 위협 속에서 북 비핵화에 대한 한·미 양국·국제사회 의지가 북의 핵보유 의지보다 훨씬 강력하다는 걸 분명히 인식할 수 있도록 공조해 나가길 희망한다"고 했다.
총리실에 따르면 양측은 한·미·일 협력이 역내 평화·안정·번영에 중요하다는 점에 공감하고 한·미·일 협력을 지속 발전시켜 나가기로 했다.
또 양측은 상호 윈-윈 방안을 찾을 수 있도록 장관급 차원에서 무역 균형·경제 협력 분야 관련해 건설적 협의를 지속해 나가기로 했다.
한 대행은 트럼프 대통령의 압도적 대선 승리와 '미국을 다시, 그 어느 때보다 위대하게' 비전 실현을 위해 리더십을 발휘하고 있는 것을 평가 후 백악관이 권한대행 체제하 한국 정부와 협력해 나가겠다고 표명한 것에 사의를 표했다.
트럼프 대통령은 소셜미디어 트루스소셜에 "한국과 좋은 거래를 할 수 있다"며 주한미군 방위비 분담금 문제를 거론하고 포괄적 협상 추진 가능성을 내비쳤다.

그러면서 "어쨌든 우리는 양국 모두를 위한 거래가 될 수 있는 여건·가능성을 지니고 있다"며 "그들의 최고 협상팀이 미국으로 향하는 비행기에 올라 있고 상황은 좋아 보인다"고 평했다.
더불어 "한국과 마찬가지로 우리는 무역·관세에 포함되지 않은 다른 주제들도 함께 꺼내 협상 대상으로 삼고 있다"며 '원스톱 쇼핑은 아름답고 효율적 절차"라고 했다.
한편 한 대행은 이날 공개된 미 CNN 인터뷰에서 '한국이 중국·일본과 같은 방식으로 미국에 대응할 건가'란 질의에 "우리는 그 경로를 택하지 않을 것"이라며 "그런 식 맞대응이 상황을 극적 개선시킬 것으로 보지 않는다"고 답했다.
