정비사업에는 총사업비 8억 원이 투입되며, 이달 중 착공해 오는 9월 완공을 목표로 하고 있다. 주요 정비 내용은 ▲산책로 재정비 ▲수목 전정 ▲노후 조명시설 교체 등이다.
경주시는 지난해 9월 정비사업 실시설계 용역을 시작으로 사업을 본격화했으며, 올해 1월에는 조명시설 정비를 위한 별도 설계도 추진했다. 지난 2월에는 국가유산청으로부터 국가지정문화유산(사적) 내 현상변경 허가를 받으며 모든 행정절차를 마무리 지었다.
시는 이번 사업을 통해 불국사를 찾는 국내외 관광객과 시민들이 더욱 쾌적한 환경에서 공원을 이용할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
