도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 22일(현지시간) 대 중국 관세·통상 협상에 대해 "지금 (미국은) 황금시대며 중국은 그 일부가 되고 싶어 한다"며 "(중국이) 만약 협상하지 않을 시 우리가 결정할 것이며 숫자도 정할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
AP통신 보도에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 백악관 집무실에서 열린 폴 앳킨스 증권거래위원회(SEC) 위원장 취임 선서 행사 후 중국과의 현 협상 상황 관련 질의에 이같이 말했다.
트럼프 대통령은 앳킨스 위원장에 대해 "암호화폐 혁신자들이 규제 확실성·명확한 규칙을 절실하게 필요로 하는 시점에 기관을 이끌 완벽한 사람"이라고 평했다.
그러면서 캐롤라인 레빗 백악관 대변인의 "매우 잘 되고 있다"는 대 중국 협상 관련 발언에 대해선 "우리는 중국과 잘하고 있고, 거의 모든 국가와 잘하고 있다"며 "궁극적으로 우리는 그들이 원하는 것을 갖고 있고, 여러분은 이런 식으로 이를 봐야 한다"고 했다.

더불어 대 중국 협상시 대중 관세율에 대해선 "(현재) 145%는 매우 높고, 우리는 펜타닐에 대해 이야기했고 다른 여러 요소가 쌓이면서 145%가 됐다"며 "(관세율이) 그 정도 높게 있진 않을 것이고 매우 상당히 내려갈 것이나 제로가 되진 않을 것이다. 그건 제로였었는데 그때 우리는 완전 파괴됐다"고 했다.
트럼프 대통령은 또 대 중국 협상에서 코로나19 문제는 언급하지 않을 것이라고 밝힌 후 "연방준비제도(Fed)는 금리를 내려야 하고 지금이 적기"라며 "우리는 연준 의장이 늑장 아닌 조기에 하는 것을 바란다"고 했다.
또 최근 자신이 금리 인하 요구 불응시 제롬 파월 연준 의장 해임 시사 발언을 한 것에 대해 "그를 해고할 생각은 전혀 없고, 그가 금리 인하 아이디어에 좀 더 적극적이길 바란다"라고 했다.
