ARC는 소듐냉각고속로(SFR) 방식의 SMR 노형인 ‘ARC-100’을 개발 중인 선도 기업으로, 캐나다 뉴브런즈윅주 포인트 레프루(Point Lepreau) 지역에 100MWe급 ARC-100 노형 원전 4기를 건설할 계획이다.
한수원은 지난해 5월 ARC, 캐나다 공기업 NB Power와 3자 협약을 체결한 바 있으며, 해당 프로젝트의 시운전, 운영, 정비 및 관리 전반에서 협력하고 있다. 이번 논의는 그 협력을 보다 구체화하기 위한 후속 조치로, SMR 사업의 글로벌 진출 기반을 다지는 계기로 평가된다.
특히 한수원은 이번 ARC와의 협력을 통해 자사의 3.5세대 혁신형 SMR(i-SMR)을 넘어 4세대 SMR 분야로 기술 영역을 확장하고, 북미 SMR 시장 진입 가능성을 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
황주호 사장은 “ARC-100은 4세대 소형 원자로 가운데 가장 상용화에 근접한 노형 중 하나”라며 “한수원은 ARC와의 긴밀한 파트너십을 바탕으로 미래 전력 수요 대응은 물론, 원자력 산업의 새로운 성장 동력을 확보해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

Hanwha Solutions Discusses Collaboration with Canada’s ARC on 4th Generation SMR…Securing a Bridgehead for Entry into North America
On the 29th, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President Hwang Joo-ho, hereinafter referred to as Hanwha Solutions) met with ARC Clean Technology (hereinafter referred to as ARC), a 4th generation small modular reactor (SMR) developer in Canada, at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul to discuss joint technology development and business cooperation.
ARC is a leading company developing the ‘ARC-100’, a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) type SMR reactor, and plans to build four 100MWe ARC-100 reactors in the Point Lepreau area of New Brunswick, Canada.
Hanwha Solutions signed a three-party agreement with ARC and Canadian public enterprise NB Power in May of last year, and is cooperating on the entire project’s commissioning, operation, maintenance, and management. This discussion is evaluated as a follow-up measure to further concretize the cooperation and as an opportunity to solidify the foundation for the global advancement of the SMR business.
In particular, through this cooperation with ARC, KHNP expects to expand its technology area beyond its 3.5th generation innovative SMR (i-SMR) to the 4th generation SMR field and increase the possibility of entering the North American SMR market.
President Hwang Joo-ho said, “ARC-100 is one of the types of 4th generation small reactors that is closest to commercialization,” and “Based on the close partnership with ARC, KHNP will secure a new growth engine for the nuclear power industry as well as respond to future power demand.”
