오성환 당진시장, 중부권 동서횡단철도 제5차 국가철도망 반영 촉구

오성환 당진시장이 2일 중부권 동서횡단철도의 제5차 국가철도망 구축계획 신규사업 반영을 촉구하는 릴레이 챌린지에 참여하며 사업 추진에 힘을 실었다.

중부권 동서횡단철도 건설사업은 충남 서산시, 당진시, 예산군, 천안시를 비롯해 충북 청주시, 증평군, 괴산군, 경북 문경시, 예천군, 영주시, 봉화군, 울진군 등 중부권 13개 시군을 동서로 가로지르는 대규모 국책사업이다.

총길이 330km에 사업비 약 7조 원이 소요될 것으로 예상되는 이 사업은 2025년 하반기 발표될 제5차 국가철도망 구축계획에 신규사업으로 반영되는 것을 목표로 13개 시군이 공동으로 노력하고 있다.

이 철도망이 구축되면 남북축 위주의 기존 철도망에서 벗어나 동서축 연결을 통해 국토의 균형발전을 이루고, 서해안 산업클러스터와 동해안 관광지구를 효과적으로 연계하여 지역 간 시너지 효과를 극대화할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 

특히 철강·관광 산업의 중심지인 당진시의 발전에도 크게 기여할 것으로 전망된다.

교통 환경 개선 효과도 상당하다. 현재 서해안에서 동해안까지 승용차로 약 3시간 30분, 버스로는 8시간 이상 소요되던 이동 시간이 약 2시간으로 단축되어 중부권 고속교통망 구축에 따른 생활 여건 개선 효과가 클 것으로 예상된다.

이번 릴레이 챌린지는 중부권 동서횡단철도 건설의 필요성과 중요성을 널리 알리고 국민적 공감대를 형성하기 위해 마련되었다.

한편, 당진시는 중부권 동서횡단철도 외에도 철도 교통 활성화를 위한 다각적인 노력을 기울이고 있다.

 2024년 개통한 서해선 복선전철 합덕역의 활성화를 위해 충남도와 협력하고 단절 구간 연결에 힘쓰는 한편, 합덕역과 석문국가산업단지를 잇는 석문산단 인입철도 건설사업은 기본설계를 완료하고 총사업비 협의를 진행 중이며 2032년 개통을 목표로 사업 추진에 박차를 가하고 있다.
