일조원 갤러리(서울시 종로구 우정국로 38 농협 B1)-원아트는 조범제 작가(화가)의 기획전을 열고 있습니다. 전시 기간은 5월13일부터 5월31일까지입니다.
조범제 화가(대한민국 민족정기미술협회 회장-전 단국대 주임교수)는 전시회 오픈 때 가진, 작가 말 서두에 “6세 때부터 그림을 그렸다”고 말했습니다. 그러하니 올해로 65년째 그림을 그려온 전문 작가인 것입니다.

일조원 갤러리(관장=강선자)에 전시된 작품들은 주로 봄의 꽃, 금강산, 새벽 풍경 등이었습니다. 100호 크기 그림 속에 배치된 봄 꽃그림에는 수천 송이의 만개한 꽃들로 가득 차 있습니다. 조 화가의 그림을 보는 이들 가운데는, 조 화가의 그림들이 불교의 불경(佛經)이 말하는, 피안(彼岸)의 세계, 또는 각(覺=깨달음)의 경지라고 보는 이들도 있었습니다. 그림 속에서는 6세 이후 손에서 붓을 놓지 않은 전문 작가의 끈질김과 혜안이 번득입니다. 공간 속의 촌(寸)이 하나도 서툴지 않습니다. 오밀조밀합니다.
일조원 갤러리 강선자 대표는 전시회 초대의 글에서 “봄꽃들이 하나 둘 지고, 초록빛 잎사귀들이 힘차게 하늘을 뻗어가는 5월, 조범제 작가님을 도시고 기획전을 오픈하게 됐다”고 강조했습니다.
조범제 화가는 지난 2021년 8월10일부터 29일까지 서울시 서대문구 서대문형무소역사관 10옥사에서 '생존 애국지사 초상화 특별전(주제="우리의 영웅, 오래오래 함께하고 싶습니다")’을 열었습니다. 국가보훈처와 서대문형무소역사관이 주관하는 전시회였습니다. 조 화가는 “이 전시회는 제76주년 광복절(8.15)을 앞두고 ‘우리의 영웅!!! 오래오래 함께하고 싶습니다’라고 강조했습니다. 이때 작가는 살아있는 애국지사들의 초상화를 그렸습니다. 그는 “살아계신 생존 애국지사 분들의 삶을 뒤돌아보고, 국민들과 함께 그분들의 뜻을 기억하려 했다”고 말했습니다. 이 전시회에서는 대한민국의 독립을 위해 헌신한 애국지사 초상화 16점과 정밀모형(피규어) 5점이 공개됐었습니다. 필자는 이 전시회를 참관했는데, 오래오래 기억됩니다.

필자는 조범제 화가를 지난 2006년에 처음으로 만났습니다. 조 화가가 경기도 한탄강 변의 화실에서 그림에 전념할 때였습니다. 이때 조 화가가 그린 누드화를 보고 “누드화 미술관을 만들어야 겠다”는 각오를 다졌었습니다. 그 후 19년 간 절치부심(切齒腐心) 노력, 3천여 점의 누드화를 매집하기에 이르렀습니다. 살면서 맺은 좋은 인연이 준, 크나큰 선물이라고 생각합니다.
필자는 조범제 화가에 대해 “그의 작품세계는 조선시대 겸재 정선의 진경산수화풍을 서양화하며, 서양화로 동양화를 바라보는 듯한 독보적인 작품 세계로, 마치 먹을 갈아 정성들여 동양화를 완성한 듯한 자신만의 독보적인 스타일”이라고 평하고 “그의 작품들은 국립현대미술관, 백범기념관, 독립기념관, 중앙일보사, 포스코, LG그룹, 브레이크뉴스 등에 작품이 소장되어 있기도 하다. 조 화가는 민족적인 화풍으로 매스컴의 주목을 받으며 우리 시대를 대표하는 화가의 한 명으로 부상했다.”고 찬(讚)한 바 있습니다.
조범제 화가는 독립운동가-3균주의자였던 조소앙 선생(1887-1958)의 친조카이자, 조시원 전 광복회장(1904-1982)의 아들입니다. 조소앙 선생은 삼균(三均)주의를 제창한 독립유공자. 그의 가족 13명이 독립유공자로 서훈됐습니다. 조 화가는 우리나라의 대표적인 독립운동 가문 출신입니다.
