정치는 바람처럼 가벼워선 안 되고, 칼처럼 날카롭기만 해도 안 된다. 그 본령은 무게 속에 품격을 품고, 절제 속에 지혜를 담는 데 있다. 무엇보다도, 받은 은혜를 아는 인의심(仁義心)이 정치인의 심저를 이뤄야 한다.

그러나 요즘 홍준표 전 대구시장-전 대통령 후보의 언행을 보면, 그 어디에도 정치의 품격은 찾아보기 어렵다. 군자불기(君子不器)라 했거늘, 그는 정치의 도구로 전락한 말과 감정을 스스로 즐긴다.
그는 당으로부터 여러 번에 걸쳐 선택을 받았다. 국회의원으로, 광역단체장으로, 대통령 후보로. 3세번(三歲飮冰)이라, 세 번 기회를 받은 자는 자신을 돌아보는 언행의 냉철함을 지녀야 하건만, 돌아온 것은 오만과 조롱, 그리고 공당을 향한 무례한 돌팔매뿐이었다.
이 얼마나 천박한 배신인가. 그의 태도를 보며, 문득 떠오르는 고사가 있다. “은혜를 입고 도리어 원수 갚는다”(負恩忘義)는 말이 있다. 그는 스스로 당이 쌓아준 정치의 탑을 무너뜨리며, 그 잔해 위에 자신의 이름을 새기려 한다. 그 모습이야말로 공자의 말처럼, “예가 무너진 세상에 위정자는 도둑과 다를 바 없다”(禮崩樂壞)는 탄식이 떠오르는 장면이다.
그의 과거 또한 지울 수 없다. 일찍이 뇌물수수 의혹으로, 그가 정치판에서 퇴장했어야 한다는 여론이 거셌다. 최종에는 무죄라했다. 그러나 당시 많은 국민은 정치적 거래, 곧 “네가 살려면 나도 살려다오” 하는 식의 야합을 의심했다. 그 그림자는 지금껏 지워지지 않았다. 그런 그가 이제와 도덕의 화신인 양, 후배 정치인을 조롱하고, 당을 기득권의 악취라 매도하며, 마치 자신만이 정의인 양 행동한다. 이는 한낱 정치적 허기를 감추려는 자기연민의 발악에 불과하다.

정치는 누구의 사유물이 아니다. 공(公)을 사(私)로 끌어오는 자는, 반드시 민심의 저울에 의해 심판받는다. “民惟邦本(민유방본)”, 백성이 나라의 근본이니, 백성의 뜻을 거스른 권력은 그 뿌리부터 흔들린다.
홍준표, 이제는 대오각성하시라. 말을 줄이고, 성찰하시라. 정치는 욕망의 발산이 아니라, 국민 앞에 무릎 꿇고 섬기는 길임을 새기시라. 그렇지 않으면, 조용히 물러나시라. 역사는 이름보다 침묵의 무게를 더 오래 기억하는 법이다. jeongkeekim@naver.com
