최민호 세종시장이 3일 치러지는 제21대 대통령선거와 관련해 시민들과 공직자들에게 “민주공화국의 구성원으로서 투표의 가치를 되새기고 반드시 소중한 한 표를 행사해달라”고 당부했다.
최 시장은 2일 시청 여민실에서 열린 ‘6월 직원 소통의 날’ 행사에서 300여 명의 직원들과 함께한 자리에서 투표의 의미와 민주주의의 본질에 대해 강조하며 이같이 밝혔다.
그는 “사전투표를 하지 못했다면 6월 3일 꼭 투표에 참여해달라”며 “투표는 단순한 권리가 아니라, ‘대한민국은 민주공화국이다’라는 헌법 제1조 1항을 실현하는 시민의 실천이자 책무”라고 설명했다.
이날 최 시장은 프랑스 시민혁명을 예로 들며, 공화정의 가치를 역사적 관점에서 짚었다. “인류의 역사 100만 년 중 99만여 년은 왕이 다스리는 시대였다”며 “백성이 직접 지도자를 선택하는 공화정은 오랜 역사 속에서 어렵게 이뤄낸 소중한 체제”라고 강조했다.
그는 이어 “우리는 지금 공화국에 살고 있으며, 투표는 이 공화국의 정체성과 가치를 지키는 수단”이라며 “특히 공직자는 다음 시대를 설계하는 사람으로서, 단순한 정치꾼이 아닌 시대와 세대를 책임질 정치인을 선택해야 한다”고 말했다.
최 시장은 “공화국의 구성원이라는 정체성을 갖고, 우리 사회가 나아갈 방향과 다음 세대의 삶을 고민해야 한다”며 “시대의 흐름을 연구하고 성찰하는 것이 공직자의 중요한 책무”라고 거듭 강조했다.
한편 이날 행사에서는 각종 유공자에 대한 표창 수여도 함께 진행됐다.
김경임 보람동지역자율방재단장은 국가재난관리 유공으로 행정안전부장관 표창을 수상했으며, 세종시청 보건환경연구원의 서민아 주무관은 ‘세종 1등 청렴인’으로 선정됐다.
또 공보관실 정웅원 주무관과 금남면 김유라 주무관은 중증응급환자 생존율 향상에 기여한 공로로 세종시장 표창을 받았다.
