서천군, "주민 손으로 동네를 다시 짓다"

충남 서천군이 주민의 손으로 마을의 변화를 이끄는 ‘서천동네살리기사업’을 본격 추진하며, 침체된 주거지에 활력을 불어넣고 있다. 

서천군지속가능지역재단 도시재생지원센터는 도시재생활성화지역의 지속적 자생력을 높이기 위한 생활밀착형 재생사업으로, 서천형 우리동네살리기를 5월 공모를 통해 선정·시행했다고 30일 밝혔다.

이번 공모에서는 '서천읍 군사리1구 ‘안전한 동네 만들기’와 '장항읍 주민자치회의 보랏빛과 함께 피어나는 정원 도시 장항’ 두 사업이 최종 선정됐다. 선정된 지역은 각각의 마을 특성과 주민 의견을 반영해, 물리적 환경 개선과 공동체 회복을 함께 꾀하고 있다.

서천읍 군사리1구는 고령 인구가 많은 데다 경사와 비탈길이 많은 지형적 특성상 안전사고 위험이 상존해왔다. 이에 따라 마을 골목 곳곳에 안전손잡이를 설치하고, 야간 보행 안전 확보를 위해 태양광 조명등을 추가로 설치했다.

장항읍에서는 주민들이 직접 참여한 정원 조성이 돋보인다. ‘보랏빛과 함께 피어나는 정원 도시 장항’이라는 주제로, 6080맛나로 거리와 창선교차로, 원수2리 마을회관 일원에 아스타 꽃을 대대적으로 식재했다. 이 사업은 단순한 미관 개선을 넘어, 정원 도시로의 전환을 지향하는 지역 정체성 형성에도 한몫하고 있다.

특히 6080맛나로 거리에는 상가와 협력을 통해 ‘상가 실명제’를 도입한 점이 눈길을 끈다. 식재된 구간마다 상가명 표찰을 부착하고, 상가 앞 화분은 점주가 직접 관리하도록 하는 방식이다. 이는 주민과 상인의 자율적 참여를 통해 지속 가능한 관리 체계를 마련한 모범 사례로 평가된다.
