(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 인천대학교가 15일, 대학의 혁신성을 평가하는 글로벌 지표 ‘2025 WURI(World University Rankings for Innovation)’에서 세계 9위에 올랐으며, 이는 지난해 13위에서 4계단 상승한 성과로, 국내 대학 중 가장 높은 순위다고 밝혔다.
인천대에 따르면, WURI는 세계 대학의 교육, 연구, 사회참여 활동이 얼마나 실질적인 변화와 사회적 파급력(Marginal Effect)을 만들어 내는지를 중심으로 평가하는 혁신대학 랭킹으로, 한자대학동맹(HLU), 국제경쟁력연구원(IPSNC), UNITAR(유엔훈련조사연구소), 스위스 프랭클린대학 테일러연구소 등 4개 기관이 공동 주관한다.
올해 평가는 전 세계 87개국 1,253개 대학이 참여하고, 총 4,866개의 혁신 프로그램이 접수되는 등 역대 최대 규모로 진행됐다.
인천대는 ‘학생 이동성과 개방성(3위)’, ‘문화·가치(4위)’, ‘지속 가능한 재정 확보(8위)’ 등 3개 주요 분야에서 모두 상위 10위권에 올랐다.
특히, 인천대는 실질성과 확산성을 갖춘 혁신 사례들이 주목을 받았다. ‘학생 이동성과 개방성’ 부문에서는 유학생이 문화를 소개한 ‘글로벌페어’와 교환학생의 지역사회 참여 프로그램 등, 소통 중심의 국제화 모델이 호평을 받았다.
‘문화·가치’ 부문에서는 건강검진과 운동지도를 연계한 통합형 복지 프로그램을 통해 학생·교직원 등 구성원 모두를 아우르는 지속가능한 캠퍼스 돌봄 생태계를 조성했다.
또한, 지역 시민과 함께 고전을 현대 사회 이슈와 연결해 해석한 인문학 특강은 세대 간 소통과 지식 공유를 실현하는 공공 인문 플랫폼으로 긍정적인 평가를 얻었다.
‘지속 가능한 재정 확보’ 부문에서는 발전기금 유치 전략과 기술이전 수익화 체계를 통해, 대학의 자생력을 높이는 구조적 변화를 이끈 점이 높이 평가됐다.
인천대는 이번 WURI 성과를 바탕으로, 대학의 혁신성과 사회적 영향력을 중시하는 WURI 평가와 지향점을 같이하는 RISE(지역혁신 중심 대학지원체계) 사업에도 더욱 박차를 가할 계획이다.
아울러, 대학 평가체계가 점차 ‘임팩트’ 중심으로 전환되고 있는 흐름에 발맞춰, 이러한 변화를 주도할 수 있는 혁신 플랫폼으로서의 역할을 한층 더 강화해 나갈 방침이다.
이인재 인천대 총장은 “이번 성과는 인천대가 실질적인 혁신 활동을 지속적으로 추진해 온 노력이 세계적으로 인정받은 결과”라며, “지역 거점국립대학으로서 인천대가 지역혁신을 중심에 둔 전략을 통해 세계 대학 평가에서도 우수성을 인정받는 대학으로 자리매김해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
인천대는 2020년 제1회 WURI 평가에서 종합 35위로 출발한 이후 2021년 26위, 2022년 21위, 2023년 18위, 2024년 13위를 거쳐 올해 9위에 오르며 5년 연속 순위 상승을 이어가고 있다.
한편, 올해 WURI 평가에서 세계 1위는 미국 미네르바대학이 차지했으며, 2위는 애리조나 주립대, 3위는 프랑스 에꼴 42가 올랐다.
국내에서는 인천대를 비롯해 서울대(19위), 한국외대(22위) 등이 30위권에 포함됐다.
