(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 중부지방해양경찰청이 16일, 관할 해상교통관제(VTS) 구역 내 선박의 안전 확보와 관제정보의 신뢰성 강화를 위해 2012년부터 ‘해상교통통신원 제도’를 운영해오고 있다고 밝혔다.
중부해경청에 따르면, 이 제도는 선박운항자, 예선협회, 항만종사자 등 민간 전문가들을 해상 교통통신원으로 위촉해 관제센터와 실시간으로 정보를 공유하고, 해상에서 발생할 수 있는 위험요소에 신속히 대응하기 위한 것이다.
현재 중부해경청 관할 인천.평택 등 6개 VTS 센터에는 총 58명의 해상교통통신원이 활동 중이며, 올해 상반기에는 어망·부유물 등 선박운항에 위협이 되는 180여 건의 정보를 실시간으로 공유하여 안전한 바닷길 만들기에 동참했다.
