공단은 5일 경주 본사에서 경북소방본부와 업무협약(MOU)을 체결하고, 회의 기간 중 소방안전 체계 구축과 지역사회 안전문화 확산을 위한 상호 협력에 나서기로 했다.
이날 협약식에는 김용완 공단 부이사장, 김명준 경북소방본부 재난대응과장, 고치환 공단 소통협력단장, 황길석 APEC 소방안전기획단 총괄팀장 등이 참석했다.
양 기관은 ▲APEC 정상회의 기간 소방력 대기장소 및 휴게공간 제공 ▲응급처치 및 소화기 사용법 등 안전교육 및 훈련 실시 ▲화재 예방을 위한 공동 캠페인 전개 ▲기타 상호 협력을 통한 공동 발전 등을 약속했다.
경주는 지난 2005년 공단이 운영하는 중·저준위 방사성폐기물 처분시설을 유치한 이후, 3,000억 원 규모의 특별지원금과 한국수력원자력 본사 이전, 방폐물 반입수수료를 활용한 지역 지원 사업 등 총 1조 3,700억 원 규모의 특별지원사업을 진행해왔다.
또한 경주컨벤션센터(HICO) 건립, 월정교 복원, 국도 개설 등 총 3조 4,000억 원 규모의 55개 일반지원사업이 추진되며 문화·관광·도시 인프라 확충 등 지역 발전이 이뤄졌고, 이는 APEC 정상회의 유치라는 국제적 성과로 이어졌다는 평가다.
이와 함께 공단은 매월 넷째 주 수요일을 ‘APEC 클린데이’로 지정하고, 임직원들로 구성된 청정누리봉사단이 경주시 일대에서 환경정화 활동, 배수구 거름망 설치, 시민의식 고취를 위한 캠페인 등을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다.
김용완 공단 부이사장은 “경주의 APEC 유치는 공단과 지역사회가 함께 이룬 성과”라며 “이번 협약을 계기로 APEC 정상회의 지원은 물론, 지역 내 안전문화 확산과 ESG 경영 실천 등 공공기관으로서의 사회적 책임을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KOREA) and Gyeongbuk Fire Department Join Hands for Successful Hosting of APEC Summit
KOREA (Chairman Cho Sung-don) and the Gyeongbuk Fire Department (Director Park Sung-yeol) have joined forces to support the successful hosting of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Gyeongju.
On the 5th, the agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Gyeongbuk Fire Department at its headquarters in Gyeongju, agreeing to collaborate on establishing a fire safety system and promoting a culture of safety in the community during the summit.
The signing ceremony was attended by KOREA Vice President Kim Yong-wan, Kim Myeong-jun, Director of the Disaster Response Division at the Gyeongbuk Fire Department, Ko Chi-hwan, Director of the KOREA Communication and Cooperation Team, and Hwang Gil-seok, General Manager of the APEC Fire Safety Planning Team.
The two organizations pledged to: ▲provide firefighting standby and rest areas during the APEC summit; ▲conduct safety education and training, including first aid and fire extinguisher usage; ▲launch joint fire prevention campaigns; and ▲encourage mutual cooperation and development.
Since hosting the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility operated by the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Corporation in 2005, Gyeongju has implemented a total of KRW 1.37 trillion in special support projects, including KRW 300 billion in special grants, the relocation of the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power headquarters, and regional support projects utilizing radioactive waste handling fees.
Furthermore, 55 general support projects totaling KRW 3.4 trillion were implemented, including the construction of the Gyeongju Convention Center (HICO), the restoration of Woljeong Bridge, and the construction of national highways. These projects have contributed to regional development through the expansion of cultural, tourism, and urban infrastructure, leading to the international success of hosting the APEC summit.
In addition, the corporation has designated the fourth Wednesday of every month as "APEC Clean Day," and its Clean Nuri Volunteer Corps, comprised of employees, has been consistently conducting environmental cleanup activities, installing drain filter screens, and campaigning to raise civic awareness throughout Gyeongju.
Kim Yong-wan, Vice President of the corporation, stated, "Gyeongju's hosting of APEC is a joint achievement between the corporation and the local community." He added, "With this agreement as a momentum, we will not only support the APEC Summit but also fulfill our social responsibilities as a public institution by promoting a local safety culture and implementing ESG management practices."
