도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 13일(현지시간) "미 중앙은행 연방준비제도(Fed·연준) 차기 의장 후보를 3∼4명으로 좁혔다"고 밝혔다.
영국 'FT(파이낸셜타임스)'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱턴 DC 케네디 센터에서 취재진과 만나 "새로운 (연준)의장을 (과거 관행 대비) 조금 더 일찍 지명할 생각"이라며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "금리 1%포인트 당 연간 국채 이자로 3천600억불(약 496조)을 부담하고 있다"며 "(기준금리를) 3∼4%포인트 더 낮춰야 한다고 생각한다"고 밝혔다. 미국 현 기준금리는 4.25∼4.50%다.
제롬 파월 현 연준 의장 임기는 오는 2026년 5월까지인 가운데 후임 의장 물색 작업은 스콧 베선트 재무장관 주도로 현재 진행 중이다.
미 'CNBC'는 이날 "차기 (연준)의장 후보군에 11명이 이름을 올리고 있다"며 "스콧 베선트 재무장관 면접을 거쳐 트럼프 대통령 결정이 이뤄질 것"이라고 전했다.
