도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 19일(현지시간) 우크라이나 안보 보장 제공 관련해 미군을 투입하지 않을 것임을 거듭 확인한 가운데 미 백악관도 이날 이를 공식 확인했다.
미 '폭스 뉴스'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 '폭스' 인터뷰에서 우크라 국경 방어를 위한 미군 배치 가능성을 일축 후 "나는 대통령이고 보장할 수 있으며 그저 사람들이 죽는 일을 막으려 노력하고 있을뿐"이라고 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "우크라이나에 어떤 형태로든 안보 보장이 필요하겠으나 나토((NATO·북대서양조약기구) 가입은 아니다"며 "그건 결코 일어나지 않을 일"이라고 했다.
이어 "(우크라 안전 보장을 위해) 유럽이 병력을 파견하려 한다"며 "미국이 지원할 의향이 있고, 아마도 방공 지원을 논의할 수 있을 것이며 우리처럼 그런 장비를 갖춘 나라는 없기 때문"이라고 전했다.
또 "우크라이나 전쟁이 나토 문제뿐 아닌 크림반도 사태에서도 비롯됐다"며 "(우크라의) 나토 가입·크림반도 반환 두 가지 모두 불가능하다"고 밝혔다.
더불어 "러시아가 지난 2014년 1차 우크라 침공 당시 크림반도를 강제 병합한 건 당시 버락 오바마 미 대통령 책임"이라며 "오바마는 단 한 발 총격 없이 넘겨줬고, 이는 내가 본 최악 부동산 거래 중 하나"라고 평했다.
