[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 의령군 유스호스텔 건립 사업이 첫 삽을 떴다.
의령군은 2일 의령읍 하리 공사 현장에서 착공식을 열고 유스호스텔 본격 조성을 알렸다.
유스호스텔은 지방소멸대응기금 148억 원과 국도비 17억을 포함한 사업비 224억 원을 들여 연면적 4,399㎡, 지상 4층, 37개 객실, 수용인원은 150명 규모로 건립된다.
또 회의와 학술대회 등을 열 수 있는 대회의장이 만들어지고, 식당과 카페, 체력단련실이 들어선다.
위치는 의령읍 하리 옛 5870부대 5대대 부지로 연간 20만 명이 방문하는 경상남도교육청 미래교육원 반경 1km 안에 있다.
이번 유스호스텔 건립은 오태완 군수 공약 사업으로 추진됐다.
미래교육원이 의령에 들어서는 게 확정되면서 외부에서 의령으로 온 학생들을 수용할 숙박시설이 없어 유스호스텔 건립 필요성이 꾸준히 제기되어 왔다.
오태완 군수는 2015년부터 비어 있는 5870부대 5대대 부지를 최적의 장소로 정하고 사업을 추진했다.
10년 가까이 흉물로 덩그러니 남아 있는 건물을 처리해달라는 주민들의 민원과 관내 단기 숙박시설이 부족해 다른 지역에 숙박하는 방문객들의 불편 사항을 동시에 해결했다.
군은 2027년 2월 준공을 목표로 공사를 추진할 예정이며, 2028년 본격적으로 운영이 시작되면 지역경제 활성화에 많은 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다.
군은 유스호스텔의 직간접 경제 유발 효과가 300억 가까운 것으로 분석했다.
특히 각종 대회·전지훈련 선수단 유치에도 청신호가 켜졌다.
