충남 서산시가 독립기념관과 함께 그동안 공식적으로 인정받지 못했던 지역 출신 독립운동가 40명을 새롭게 발굴해 국가보훈부에 포상을 추천했다.
서산시는 지난 5월 독립기념관과 체결한 ‘광복 80주년 기념 보훈 문화 확산 협약’에 따라 공동 조사에 착수했으며, 일제강점기 당시 작성된 공문서와 지역 자료를 면밀히 살펴왔다.
이 과정에서 시청 문서고에 보관된 ‘수형인명표 폐기목록’이 결정적인 단서가 됐다. 해당 자료를 통해 운산면 태봉리 출신 19명, 용현리 출신 18명 등 총 37명이 새롭게 확인됐고, 추가 문헌 조사에서 독립운동가 3명이 더 발견됐다.
이번 조사는 단순한 문헌 검토에 그치지 않고 지역 주민의 증언 채록과 독립기념관의 학술조사가 병행돼 신뢰성을 높였다. 독립기념관은 제적부 발급 등 행정 지원도 맡아 발굴 기록의 역사적 가치를 공고히 했다.
서산시는 발굴된 40명이 내년 3·1절을 맞아 포상을 받을 수 있도록 국가보훈부와 긴밀히 협력할 계획이다.
