시에 따르면 외국인 관광객이 가장 많이 찾는 곳은 동부사적지 인근의 황남시장과 황리단길이다. 이번 조치에는 이 지역 100여 개 점포가 먼저 참여했으며, 앞으로 중심상가와 황오동 도시재생 지역으로도 확산될 것으로 기대된다.
참여 점포에는 화장실 위생 소모품과 시 홍보 기념품이 지원되며, 경주시는 이용객이 안심할 수 있도록 청결·안전 관리도 강화한다. 또 관광객이 쉽게 찾을 수 있도록 무료 개방 점포에는 전용 스티커가 부착된다.
황리단길의 한 상인은 “처음에는 불편할 것이라 생각했지만, 깨끗하고 친절한 도시 이미지를 세우는 데 기여할 수 있어 보람을 느낀다”며 “작은 배려가 관광객 만족도와 매출 상승으로 이어질 것”이라고 말했다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “외국인 관광객에게 가장 필요한 서비스 중 하나가 화장실 편의 제공”이라며 “상점들의 참여와 시민들의 환대 정신을 바탕으로 APEC 성공 개최는 물론 경주의 친절하고 따뜻한 이미지를 세계에 알리겠다”고 강조했다.
