브레이크뉴스 노보림 기자= 작품은 작가를 닮는다는 말이 있다. 어찌 보면 창작자의 생각이나 작업 환경은 그대로 작품에 투영될 수밖에 없다. 때문에 작품을 들여다보기 이전에, 작가를 먼저 들여다보면 그 작품을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있다. 이에 브레이크뉴스는 국내 작가들과의 릴레이 인터뷰를 통해 작가의 작품은 물론, 삶의 이야기를 들어보는 시간을 가지려고 한다. <편집자 주>
-작품을 그릴 때 주로 어디에서 영감을 받나.
주로 어린 시절의 기억과 일상의 사소한 부분에서 영감을 받는다. 평소에 혼자 상상하는 것을 좋아해서 일상적인 경험이나 물건들을 나만의 캐릭터나 장면으로 바꿔보는 것을 좋아한다. 인상적인 기억이나 감정들은 기록해 두었다가 낙서처럼 이미지로 그려보기도 한다. 아이디어가 떠오르지 않거나 막힐 때면 전시를 보러 가거나 산책을 하면서 자연과 사람들을 관찰한다. 주변을 관찰하다 눈에 띄는 흥미로운 모양이나 패턴을 스케치북에 그려 두었다가 나중에 작품에 활용한다.
-독자들에게 자신의 작품 2~3점 소개해 달라.

왕관은 자아를 상징한다. 왕관을 쓴 캐릭터가 새가 들어있는 새장을 들고 있는 모습은 사람들이 본인의 자아에 사로잡혀서 스스로를 구속하고 있는 것을 상징한다. 일정한 높이와 모양의 나무들은 정돈되어 보이기도 하지만 어떠한 틀에서 벗어나지 못하는 듯한 느낌을 준다.

왕관을 쓴 캐릭터가 무언가를 찾아 떠나는 여정의 일부로 악어의 모습을 한 섬에 도착해서 왕관을 찾아 헤매는 장면이다. 그림 속의 캐릭터는 자아와 내면의 아이를 상징하는 왕관을 따라가며 여러 환상적인 장소들과 상황들을 마주한다.

화분에서 자라나는 무언가는 사람 같기도 하고 엉킨 실타래 같기도 한 이상한 모습이다. 뒤엉켜 있는 이 형상의 한쪽은 눈과 입을 가졌고 다른 한쪽은 코만 가지고 있습니다. 이 둘은 서로에게 없는 것을 가졌기 때문에 서로에게 집착할 수밖에 없고 그 집착은 화분에 서 열매가 자라듯이 점점 자라난다.
-왜 작가로서의 삶을 선택했나.
유년시절부터 그림 그리는 것을 좋아했다. 나의 감정과 내가 하고 싶은 이야기를 그림으로 자유롭게 표현하는 것이 즐거웠고, 자연스럽게 미국에서 미대에 진학했다. 사람들이 내 그림 을 보며 공감하고 즐거워하는 것이 엄청난 보람이라는 것을 알게 되었다. 그래서 사람들에게 위로를 줄 수 있는 작가라는 직업을 선택했다.
-작가로 활동하며 가장 힘들었던 순간이 있다면 언제였나.
작가 활동을 시작한지 오래되지는 않았지만 내가 맞는 길로 가고 있나 하는 의구심이 들 때가 가장 힘든 것 같다. 대학교를 졸업한 이후 혼자 작업을 하면서 누군가의 피드백을 받을 기회가 줄어들었고 나의 생각이나 판단에 확신을 가지고 작업을 해야 한다는 것에 대한 부담감도 생겼다. 하지만 이런 불안감을 이기고 한 걸음 한 걸음 밟아 나가는 것이 재미있고 뿌듯하기도 하다.
-반대로 가장 행복했던 순간은?
사람들이 내 전시를 보고 행복해 하거나 마음의 위로를 받는다는 이야기를 들었을 때 가장 큰 행복감을 느낀다. 단순히 시각적인 즐거움을 넘어 내가 하고자 하는 이야기와 누군가의 마음이 연결되는 순간은 특별한 의미가 있다. 누군가가 내 그림에서 자신의 이야기를 발견하고 그들에게 작은 기쁨이 되는 것이 내가 창작을 계속 할 수 있는 가장 큰 원동력이다.
-앞으로의 전시 계획은
여러 공모전, 그룹전, 국내외 아트페어에서 작업들을 선보일 예정이다.

-Where do you primarily draw inspiration for your work?
I'm mostly inspired by childhood memories and the little things in everyday life. I enjoy imagining things on my own, so I like to transform everyday experiences and objects into my own characters or scenes. I record impressive memories or emotions and then draw them out as images, like doodles. When I'm stuck or struggling for ideas, I visit exhibitions or go for a walk to observe nature and people. I observe my surroundings and draw interesting shapes and patterns in my sketchbook, which I then use in my work.
- Could you please share two or three of your works with our readers?
A crown symbolizes the ego. The crowned character holding a birdcage symbolizes how people are trapped by their own egos and hold themselves back. The trees, each with a consistent height and shape, appear organized, yet convey a sense of being trapped within a certain framework.
This painting depicts a crowned character arriving on an island shaped like a crocodile, searching for a crown as part of a journey to find something. The character in the painting follows the crown, which symbolizes the ego and inner child, through various fantastical locations and situations.
The thing growing in the pot is a strange shape, resembling both a person and a tangled ball of thread. One side of this tangled figure has eyes and a mouth, while the other has only a nose. Because these two possess something the other lacks, they inevitably become obsessed with each other, and that obsession grows like fruit growing in a pot.
-Why did you choose a life as an artist?
I've loved drawing since childhood. I enjoyed freely expressing my emotions and the stories I wanted to tell through art, and naturally, I went on to study art in the United States. I discovered that seeing people relate to and enjoy my work is incredibly rewarding. That's why I chose the profession of artist, a profession that allows me to bring comfort to others.
-What was the most difficult moment in your career as an artist?
It hasn't been long since I started my career, but I think the most difficult times are when I doubt whether I'm on the right path. After graduating from university, I started working alone, which reduced my opportunities for feedback, and I felt the pressure of having to be confident in my own thoughts and judgments. However, overcoming these anxieties and taking each step forward is both enjoyable and rewarding.
-On the other hand, what was your happiest moment? I find the greatest joy when I hear that people are happy or find comfort in my exhibitions. Beyond mere visual pleasure, the moment when someone's heart connects with the story I want to tell holds special meaning. Seeing someone discover their own story in my paintings and bring them a little joy is the greatest driving force behind my continued creative endeavors.

I plan to showcase my work in various competitions, group exhibitions, and art fairs both domestically and internationally.
