HD현대일렉트릭은 미국 텍사스 최대 전력회사와 765kV 초고압 변압기 및 리액터 24대 공급 계약을 체결했다고 22일 밝혔다. 계약 규모는 약 2,778억 원으로, 회사 창사 이래 단일 계약 기준 최대치다. 공급 물량은 2029년까지 순차적으로 인도된다.
765kV 초고압 변압기는 현재 미국 내 최대 전압 사양으로, 장거리 송전망 구축의 핵심 설비다. 345kV급 변압기에 비해 송전 용량은 5배로 늘어나고 전력 손실과 건설 원가는 줄어 경제성이 높다. 고도의 설계·제작 기술이 필요해 전 세계 소수 기업만이 생산할 수 있는 ‘하이엔드 장비’다.
이번 수주는 단순히 한 건의 대형 계약을 넘어, 북미 전력 인프라 재편 흐름과 맞닿아 있다. 미국의 전력망은 약 70%가 1960년대에 구축된 노후 설비로 교체 수요가 쏟아지고 있다. 동시에 풍력·태양광 발전소가 수요처에서 멀리 떨어진 지역에 집중돼 있어, 안정적인 장거리 송전망 구축은 국가적 과제다.

HD현대일렉트릭은 1999년 국내 신서산 변전소에 765kV 초고압 변압기를 처음 공급한 이후, 당진화력·신고리 원전 등 국내 주요 발전소와 미국·인도 등 해외 시장에 총 160대 이상을 납품하며 기술력을 입증해왔다.
회사는 오는 2027년 미국 알라바마 공장 증설을 통해 북미 현지 생산 능력을 강화할 계획이다. 이는 단순한 수주 대응을 넘어, 현지화 기반의 시장 선점 전략으로 평가된다. 현지 생산 체계가 마련되면 납기 단축, 물류비 절감, 신속한 A/S 제공 등 고객사 대응력이 크게 향상될 전망이다.

By winning its largest single contract ever, the company is proving both its technological prowess and its market position.
$277.8 Billion KRW Contract with Major Texas Utility
HD Hyundai Electric announced on the 22nd that it signed a contract with a leading Texas electric utility to supply 24 units of 765kV UHV transformers and reactors. The deal, valued at approximately 277.8 billion KRW (around $205 million USD), is the largest single contract in the company's history. The equipment will be delivered sequentially through 2029.
The 765kV UHV transformer is currently the highest voltage specification in the U.S. and is a core piece of equipment for building long-distance transmission networks. It increases transmission capacity by fivefold compared to 345kV transformers, while reducing power loss and construction costs, making it highly economical. Since it requires advanced design and manufacturing technology, it is considered a 'high-end equipment' produced by only a handful of companies globally.
Strategic Position in U.S. Grid Restructuring
This order is more than just a large-scale contract; it aligns directly with the restructuring of North America's power infrastructure:
Aging Infrastructure: About 70% of the U.S. power grid was built in the 1960s, creating an enormous demand for replacement.
Renewable Energy Integration: The concentration of wind and solar farms in areas far from demand centers makes stable, long-distance transmission a national imperative.

Technological Leadership and Alabama Plant Expansion
HD Hyundai Electric has demonstrated its technology since first supplying the 765kV UHV transformer to Korea's Shinseosan Substation in 1999. Since then, it has supplied over 160 units to major power plants in Korea (like Dangjin Thermal Power and Shin-Kori Nuclear Power Plant) and to international markets including the U.S. and India.
The company plans to strengthen its local production capacity in North America by expanding its Alabama plant by 2027. This is seen as a market-preemption strategy based on localization, not just a response to the order. Once the local production system is complete, the company expects a significant improvement in customer response, including shorter lead times, reduced logistics costs, and prompt after-sales service (A/S).
This contract is significant because it secures a strategic position for a Korean electric equipment company in the global energy transition. The U.S. is the world's largest power market, known for its high technological and quality barriers. Securing the largest single order there signals that HD Hyundai Electric has joined the 'elite few' in the global UHV transformer market.
