우리 야구 대표팀이 또 대만에게 패했고, 이번에는 깔끔히 콜드게임 패를 당했다. 대만은 이제 더 이상 90년대의 한국에게 승수자판기로 승리를 갖다 바치던 약체팀이 아니다. 대만과 우리 대표팀의 통산 국제 대회 전적은 26승 17패로 아직까지는 앞서 있지만 최근 아마든 프로든 언제 대만을 깔끔하게 이겼는지도 기억이 나지 않는다. 야구는 대만의 국기이다. 그만큼 엄청난 투자를 해왔고 좋은 선수들 양성하는데 힘을 썼다. 그리고 대만인들 나름대로 한국을 이길 수 있다 생각하고 있으며 대만인들이 한국전을 바라볼 때 한국인들이 한일전을 바라볼 때처럼 비슷한 심정으로 바라보고 있다. 그래서 대회를 불문하고 관심도가 상당하고 이겨야 된다는 생각이 강하다.
1998년 방콕 아시안게임에서는 콜드게임 승이라는 압도적인 실력을 보여주었으나 더블리그에서 다시 만났을 때는 8회에 가까스로 4-3 역전을 기록해 겨우 승리했으며, 1999년 아시아 선수권 때도 연장 11회까지 가는 접전 끝에 박재홍의 끝내기 안타로 겨우 승리했다. 2002년 부산 아시안게임 때도 막판까지 추격을 허용하는 등 한국을 상대로 저력을 보여왔다. 2006년 월드 베이스볼 클래식 때는 9회에 박진만의 호수비가 아니었다면 경기를 내줬을 지도 모르는 위기 상황을 맞이하기도 했고, 2013년 월드 베이스볼 클래식때도 8회의 기적이 나오기 전까지 계속 끌려다녔았다. 2018년 자카르타 아시안 게임에서는 실업 선수가 포함된 대만 대표팀이 한국 대표팀을 꺾는 파란을 일으키기도 했으며, 2019년 프리미어 12에서는 프로 군단으로 압승을 거두기도 했다.
2023년 WBC 때는 네덜란드를 꺾고 우위를 점하는가 하면 아시안게임에서도 4-0으로 한국을 이겼다. 결국 아시안게임 결승전에서 2-0으로 겨우 이겨 금메달을 딸 수 있었다. 작년 프리미엄 12에는 2-6으로 패배했다. 앞서 말했듯 대만은 이제 더 이상 만만한 상대가 아닌 우리와 대등한 수준으로 올라왔다. 그런데도 안타까운 것은 아직 우리는 대만을 90년대 수준으로 보고 있다는 것이다. 대만이 해왔던 각고의 투자, 그리고 그에 대한 노력과 결실을 깡그리 무시하고 여전히 대만을 한 수 아래로 여기며 무시하고 있다. 대만은 이미 변화했는데 우리는 여전히 대만을 쉽게 이기는 상대로 여기고 아시아에서는 일본만이 우리가 대적할 수 있는 팀으로 착각하고 있는 것이다. 대만이 성장하는 동안 한국 야구는 2015년 프리미엄 12에서 우승한 이후, 갈수록 국제 무대에서 퇴보하고 있다.
따라서 한국은 한국의 현실을 깨닫지 못한 채, 대만 쯤은 여전히 이길 수 있다, 혹은 여전히 쉽게 이길 것이다라고 여기고 있는 것이다. 대만이 한국 대표팀에게 승수자판기 대주던 90년 대에서 벌써 30여 년이 지났다. 우리는 대만이 성장했고 대등한 실력을 갖췄음을 인정하고 받아들여야 한다. 여전히 대만이 90년대와 같을 것이라 생각하는 것은 오산이다. 이런 인식은 한국인들이 바라보는 국제관과 아주 묘하게 닮아있다. 러시아는 공산주의를 버린 지 30년이 지났는데도 여전히 쏘련, 혹은 공산주의 및 사회주의 국가로 여긴다. 한국인들의 뇌리에는 한 번 공산국가면 영원한 공산국가로 여기고 있는듯 싶다. 반면 미국은 여전히 자유 민주주의 국가로 여기고 있다. 부정선거, 선거불복, SNS에서 각종 규제 및 탄압, 언론의 획일화 및 자신들과 다른 의견은 철저히 짓밟아 버리는 행태 등은 자유 민주주의와 거리가 먼 모습이다.
1990년대의 아름다울 미(美)자의 풍요롭고 기회의 땅이라 여겨지던 미국, 세계 최강자이자 단극 세계의 1인자로 군림하던 미국도 서서히 저물어가고 있다. 그럼에도 이를 여전히 깨닫지 못하는 것은 한국인들이다. 한국인들은 미국이 수만년 갈 것이고 그 영화는 영원할 것이라고 믿는다. 화무십일홍(花無十日紅) 권불십년(權不十年)이라고 했다. 달도 차면 기우는 법, 그 어떤 것도 영원하지 않으며 어떻게든 변화하게 되어 있다는 진리를 깨닫지 못하면 함께 망하는 법이다. 한국은 안타깝게도 120~30년 전의 개화기 때로 퇴보하고 있다. 한국인들은 변화에 경직되어 있고 속도도 느리다. 한국이 IT가 강국이고 빠르게 변화하면 뭐하나? 한국인들의 인식이나 시각, 국제관 자체가 286 컴퓨터보다 느린데 말이다.

Our national baseball team has lost to Taiwan again, this time in a clean-cut defeat. Taiwan is no longer the underdog team that used to hand out wins to Korea in the 1990s. Taiwan and our national team still hold a 26-17 record in international competitions, but I can't recall a recent, clean-cut victory over Taiwan, either amateur or professional. Baseball is Taiwan's national sport. They've invested heavily in developing talented players. Furthermore, the Taiwanese believe they can beat Korea, and they view the Korea match with the same fervor as Koreans do the Korea-Japan match. Therefore, regardless of the competition, there's considerable interest and a strong sense of need to win.
At the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games, the team demonstrated overwhelming prowess, winning a close game. However, in their rematch in the Double League, they narrowly won, narrowly tying the score at 4-3 in the eighth inning. At the 1999 Asian Championships, they narrowly won a close game that went into the 11th inning thanks to Park Jae-hong's walk-off hit. At the 2002 Busan Asian Games, they also demonstrated their prowess against Korea, allowing them to keep the game close until the very end. We must acknowledge and accept that Taiwan has grown and achieved equal capabilities. It would be a mistake to assume Taiwan is still the same as it was in the 1990s. This perception is strangely similar to the international perspective Koreans hold. Russia, despite abandoning communism 30 years ago, is still viewed as the Soviet Union, or a communist or socialist state. Koreans seem to believe that once a communist state, always a communist state. In contrast, the United States is still viewed as a liberal democracy. Election fraud, refusal to accept election results, various regulations and suppression of social media, uniformity in the media, and the utter suppression of dissenting opinions are far from liberal democracy.
The United States, once considered a land of abundance and opportunity, a beautiful symbol of the 1990s, once the world's most powerful nation and the leader of a unipolar world, is slowly fading. Yet, it's Koreans who still don't understand this. Koreans believe America will last tens of thousands of years and its glory will last forever. As the saying goes, "Flowers don't bloom for ten days," and "Power doesn't last ten years." If we fail to grasp the truth that even the moon waxes and wanes, that nothing lasts forever and is subject to change, we will all perish together. Unfortunately, Korea is regressing to the period of enlightenment 120 to 130 years ago. Koreans are rigid and slow to change. What good does it do if Korea is an IT powerhouse and changes rapidly? Koreans' perceptions, perspectives, and international views are inherently slower than a 286 computer.
