시대를 앞서서 간 사람에게는 두 가지의 힘이 있었다. 생각하는 힘과 미래를 보는 안목이다. 이 두 가지를 갖춘 사람 중에는 지리학자 김정호가 있다.

필자는 지난 10월2일 점심 무렵, 그 앞을 걸으면서 김정호의 남다른 생각과 미래를 보는 안목을 생각했다.
김정호, 1866년 그가 멸(滅)한 해로부터 시작하면, 그는 지금부터 259년 전의 인물이다. 그 당시는 지금처럼 차가 있거나 핸드폰이 있는 시대가 아니다, 우마차(牛馬車)가 다녔을 정도다. 이를 전제로 상상하면, 김정호는 몸이 건강한 남자였음직 하다. 편식(偏食)하지 않는 남자였었겠다. 온 나라를 걸어 다녔을 테니까. 지도를 그리기 위해 집을 나서면 몇날 며칠이고 외지에 살았을 것이다. 그러하니 아주 건강한 남자였지 않았을까?
