[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 조선시대 과학기술의 비약적인 발전을 이룬 당대 최고의 과학자인 장영실이 국내 잠수함 설계 및 건조기술이 집약된 세계 최고 수준의 디젤잠수함 장영실함(SS-087)으로 부활했다.
해군과 방위사업청은 22일 한화오션 거제사업장에서 장보고‑Ⅲ Batch‑Ⅱ 1번함인 '장영실함' 진수식을 가졌다.
장보고‑Ⅲ는 3,000톤급 잠수함 획득사업으로서 Batch‑Ⅰ은 도산안창호급 잠수함이며, 이번에 진수하는 장영실함은 Batch‑Ⅱ의 첫 번째 함정이다.
국내에서 독자적 설계로 건조한 장영실함은 지난 2019년 건조계약을 체결한 이후, 2021년 착공식과 2023년 기공식을 거쳐 이날 진수식을 갖게 됐다.
해군의 첫 3,600톤급 잠수함인 장영실함은 세계 최고 수준의 디젤잠수함이자 다양한 해양안보 위협에 대한 대응능력이 한층 강화된 핵심전략자산이다.
장영실함은 기존의 도산안창호급 잠수함에 비해 탐지 및 타격 능력, 은밀성, 생존성 등 여러 분야에서 전반적으로 성능이 향상됐다.
이날 함정 진수는 해군 관습에 따라 주빈인 강동길 해군참모총장의 부인 박미영 여사가 함정에 연결된 진수줄을 절단했다.
강동길 해군참모총장은 “우리 기술로 건조된 장영실함이 스마트 정예 강군의 도약을 알리는 신호탄이자 대한민국 해양수호의 핵심 전력으로서 소임을 완수할 것이라 확신한다”고 말했다.
잠수함의 함명은 군사력·해양력·과학기술 발전 및 외세항쟁·독립운동 등에 기여하여 국민의 존경을 받는 인물을 선정하고 있다.
장영실함은 시험평가 기간을 거쳐 2027년 말 해군에 인도되며 이후 전력화 과정을 마치고 실전 배치될 예정이다.
