[브레이크뉴스=황민성 기자] 가야문화권의 중심지인 함안군이 경남의 첫 고도(古都) 지정을 향해 본격적인 발걸음을 내디뎠다.
함안군은 23일 경남연구원과 함께 ‘아라가야 왕도 함안의 고도 지정 및 육성’을 위한 업무협약을 체결했다.
이번 협약을 통해 양 기관은 아라가야 문화유산 조사·연구를 비롯해 고도 지정을 위한 학술대회 개최, 고도 주민프로그램 운영 등 폭넓은 분야에서 상호 협력체계를 구축할 예정이다.
현재 고도는 2004년 제정된 고도 보존에 관한 특별법에 따라 경북 경주시, 충남 공주시·부여군, 전북 익산시에 이어 2024년 경북 고령군이 추가 지정되며 모두 5개 지역이 지정·육성되고 있다.
이들 지역은 핵심유적의 체계적 정비와 ‘고도 이미지 찾기’ 사업 등 도시 경관 조성뿐 아니라 주민 생활환경 개선 및 복리증진 사업을 통해 신라·백제·가야문화를 대표하는 역사도시로 자리매김하고 있다.
함안군은 가야문화권 내에서 가장 많은 가야 유적이 분포한 지역으로, 세계유산 말이산고분군을 비롯해 가야 최대의 왕성인 가야리유적, 최대 토기 생산지인 천제산 일원 토기가마군, 국가 제의시설인 당산유적, 봉산산성·안곡산성 등 1500여 년 전 아라가야 왕도의 흔적이 잘 보존되어 있다. 이러한 점에서 고도 지정의 요건을 충분히 갖춘 지역으로 평가된다.
이번 협약에 따라 양 기관은 ▲함안 아라가야 고도의 역사적 가치 규명 ▲고도 지정 및 육성을 위한 주민 프로그램 운영 ▲핵심 문화유산 지정 및 조사·연구 상호 협력 ▲문화유산 공개 및 활용 등 다양한 분야에서 긴밀히 협력해 나갈 계획이다.
조근제 함안군수는 “이번 협약으로 가야문화의 중심지이자 경남의 첫 고도로서 아라가야 왕도 함안이 조속히 지정될 수 있는 기반이 마련됐다”며 “경남연구원과의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 2026년 고도 지정을 반드시 이루어내고, 함안을 가야 역사문화도시로 확고히 자리매김시키겠다”고 밝혔다.
