The Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) took third place overall in the high school division (under 18) at the 106th National Sports Festival held in Busan from the 17th to the 23rd, extending its streak of third-place finishes to five consecutive years.

The Gyeongbuk high school team won a total of 120 medals: 39 gold, 36 silver, and 45 bronze. After a fierce competition, they beat Busan and South Chungcheong Province to take third place overall, following Gyeonggi and Seoul. This once again confirmed Gyeongbuk's status as a "sports powerhouse."

In particular, Gyeongbuk student athletes demonstrated their nation's best performance, setting three new records and tying one.

In the boys' air rifle shooter category, Lee Jun-seop (Gyeongbuk Physical Education High School) set a new competition record with 249.3 points. In the boys' track and field category, Park Si-hoon (Geumgo High School) broke his previous personal record with 19.72 m, winning gold for the third consecutive year.

In the mixed 4x400m relay, Park Ji-young and Seo Ye-rim (both Gyeongbuk Physical Education High School), Jeong Min-jae (Sunshim High School), and Yoon Yeong-min (Pohang Idong High School) set a new competition record with a time of 3 minutes 30.96 seconds.

In the girls' 76kg weightlifting category, Jeon Hee-soo (Gyeongbuk Physical Education High School) tied her own competition record with a snatch of 98 kg, achieving her second consecutive triple crown (snatch, clean and jerk, and total) at the event.

Team performances also stood out. Seongju Girls' High School achieved a second consecutive gold medal in the girls' high school hockey event, and Gimcheon Central High School's sepak takraw team won the boys' high school gold medal for the first time in four years since 2021.

Gyeongbuk Physical Education High School achieved a record-breaking total of 20 gold, 10 silver, and 15 bronze medals, demonstrating the strength of Gyeongbuk Sports as a specialized high school for sports.

This achievement is attributed to the Gyeongbuk Office of Education's consistent efforts, including supporting school sports teams, expanding sports infrastructure, improving coach compensation, and fostering regionally-linked sports.

Superintendent Lim Jong-sik said, "Achieving third place overall for five consecutive years is a valuable result of the combined efforts of students, coaches, schools, and the community. We will continue to strengthen the foundation of school sports so that students can experience growth and inspiration through physical education."
