도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 26일(현지시간) "미국을 대표해 이(태국·캄보디아) 무력 충돌 해결을 돕고 자랑스럽고 독립적 국가들이 번영할 수 있는 이 지역 미래를 만들어갈 수 있게 돼 자랑스럽다"고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 아세안(ASEAN·동남아시아국가연합) 정상 회의 참석차 방문한 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르에서 "두 나라(태국·캄보디아)가 무력 충돌을 끝내는 역사적 협정을 맺었다"며 이같이 전했다.
최근 군사 충돌을 빚었던 태국·캄보디아는 이날 트럼프 대통령 주재 하에 아누틴 찬위라꾼 태국 총리와 훈 마넷 캄보디아 총리가 휴전 협정을 체결한 가운데 올해 아세안 의장국 말레이시아 안와르 이브라힘 총리도 함께 자리했다.
이번 협정에 따라 태국·캄보디아는 무력 충돌 등 모든 적대 행위를 끝내고 국경 지대에서 중화기 등을 철수하는 가운데 태국은 캄보디아군 포로 18명을 송환키로 했다.
트럼프 대통령은 서명식에서 "많은 이들이 이뤄질 수 없을 거라 했던 일을 우리가 해냈고, 아마도 수백만 목숨을 살렸기 때문에 매우 흥분된다"고 했다.
아누틴 태국 총리는 "이번 협정 체결이 태국·캄보디아 관계의 새로운 장을 열 것"이라며 "트럼프 대통령이 양국 평화를 위해 개인적으로 헌신한 것에 감사하다"고 화답했다.

트럼프 대통령은 또 이날 캄보디아와의 무역 협정 및 태국과 핵심 광물 관련 협력 협정에 각각 서명했다.
태국·캄보디아는 그간 프랑스의 인도차이나 통치 시기 형성된 800㎞ 국경을 둘러싼 분쟁을 벌여 온 가운데 지난 5월 태국·캄보디아·라오스 국경이 접하는 '에메랄드 트라이앵글' 지역 충돌로 캄보디아 군인 1명이 숨진 바 있다.
또 앞서 앞서 지난 7월 태국·캄보디아 간 닷새간 국경 분쟁으로 66명 사망 이후 긴장이 고조되던 중 지뢰 폭발 사고를 이유로 태국이 캄보디아 대사를 추방하며 자국 대사를 불러들인데 이어 본격 교전이 전개됐다.
이에 트럼프 대통령이 양국 정상에게 직접 전화해 상호 교전을 중단 않을 시 무역 협상 중단을 경고했으며 그후 이번 휴전에 이르렀다.
