【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=일본의 러시아 중세사 연구 1세대로 꼽히는 세계적 석학 쿠리우자와 다케오(栗生澤 猛夫·81) 일본 홋카이도대학교 명예교수가 포항을 찾아 시민들과 러시아·우크라이나 전쟁의 역사적 배경을 주제로 강연을 펼쳤다.
뉴스포레가 주최하고 (주)라인세븐이 후원한 이번 강연회는 ‘환동해 이웃 포항에서 러시아-우크라이나를 생각한다’를 주제로 지난 7일 포항시립 포은중앙도서관에서 열렸다.
이날 행사에는 이대공 (사)애린복지재단 이사장, 이상모 포항시문화재단 이사장, 배용재 변호사 등 주요 인사를 비롯해 교수, 공무원, 대학생 등 시민 200여 명이 참석했다. 또한 동북아지방정부연합(NEAR) 사무국의 아나스타시아 선임연구원 등 러시아·일본 관계자와 외국인 유학생들도 자리해 관심을 모았다.
임재현 뉴스포레 발행인은 인사말에서 “제자의 초청으로 이뤄진 일본 노석학의 방문이 단순한 강연을 넘어 한·일 간 인문학 교류의 장이 됐다”며 “지진 피해를 겪은 모리오카와 포항의 공통점에서도 깊은 연대감을 느낀다”고 말했다.
쿠리우자와 교수는 특강에서 “푸틴 대통령이 우크라이나의 고대사를 부정하며 두 나라의 우열을 주장하는 것은 과거 일본이 한국에 강요했던 역사인식과 유사하다”며 “역사 왜곡은 어떤 형태로든 정당화될 수 없다”고 지적했다.
그는 2021년 푸틴 대통령이 발표한 논문 ‘러시아인과 우크라이나인의 역사적 일체성에 대하여’를 언급하며 “이번 침공은 단순한 군사행동이 아니라 역사관에서 비롯된 결과”라고 분석했다. 이어 “서구와 일본 학계가 오랫동안 우크라이나의 독자적 역사관을 외면해왔다”며 “이 인식을 바로잡기 위해 2024년 ‘키예프·루시 고(考)’를 집필했다”고 밝혔다.
쿠리우자와 교수는 “‘키예프·루시’는 9세기부터 13세기 초까지 오늘날의 우크라이나를 중심으로 존재한 국가로, 흔히 ‘키예프·러시아’라고 부르는 것은 잘못된 표현”이라며 “정확한 명칭은 ‘키예프·루시’”라고 강조했다.
그는 또 “러시아는 침략국가로 비춰지기도 하지만 문학, 예술, 우주공학 등 여전히 인류사적으로 중요한 자산을 가진 나라”라며 “톨스토이, 도스토옙스키의 문학이 내 학문의 출발점이 됐다”고 말했다.
60년간 러시아 중세사 연구에 매진해온 그는 “정년퇴직 후에야 비로소 자유롭게 연구하며 더 많은 성과를 거둘 수 있었다”고 회고했다. 최근에는 ‘그림으로 보는 러시아의 역사’(2010), ‘러시아 원초연대기 읽기’(2015), ‘이반 뇌제의 그림연대기집’(2019), ‘키예프 루시 고(考)’(2024) 등을 펴냈으며, 올해 말 ‘이반 뇌제와 쿠르프스키 공의 서간집’을 출간할 예정이다.
질의응답에서 쿠리우자와 교수는 “일본의 과거 침략에 대해 깊이 반성한다”며 “한국은 일본보다 훨씬 역동적이고 솔직한 사회”라고 평가했다. 푸틴의 향후 행보에 대해서는 “침략과 독재가 계속된다면 러시아의 미래는 어두울 것”이라고 전망했다.
이번 강연은 포항 출신 제자 김민섭 (주)세븐라인 대표의 초청으로 성사됐다. 쿠리우자와 교수는 부인과 함께 방한해 포항 시민들과의 깊은 학문적 교류의 시간을 마무리했다.

【Break News Pohang】Reporter Park Young-jae = Takeo Kuriuzawa (栗生澤 猛夫, 81), a world-renowned scholar and professor emeritus at Hokkaido University in Japan and a first-generation Japanese scholar of Russian medieval history, visited Pohang and gave a lecture to the public on the historical background of the Russo-Ukrainian War.
Hosted by News Foret and sponsored by Line Seven, the lecture, titled "Thinking about Russia and Ukraine in Pohang, a Neighboring East Sea Rim," took place on the 7th at the Pohang City Poeun Central Library.
The event was attended by approximately 200 citizens, including Lee Dae-gong, Chairman of the Aerin Welfare Foundation; Lee Sang-mo, Chairman of the Pohang City Cultural Foundation; and Bae Yong-jae, an attorney. The event also attracted attention from Russian and Japanese officials, including Anastasia, a senior researcher at the Northeast Asia Regional Government Association (NEAR) Secretariat, and international students.
In his opening remarks, Lim Jae-hyun, publisher of News Fore, said, "The visit of Professor Noh Seok-hak to Japan, invited by his student, went beyond a simple lecture and became a platform for humanities exchange between Korea and Japan. He added, "I also feel a deep sense of solidarity in the commonalities between Morioka and Pohang, which both suffered earthquake damage."
Professor Kuriuzawa stated in his special lecture, "President Putin's denial of Ukraine's ancient history and assertion of the superiority of the two countries is similar to the historical perception Japan imposed on Korea in the past." He added, "Historical distortion cannot be justified in any way."
Referring to Putin's 2021 paper, "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians," he analyzed, "This invasion was not simply a military action, but the result of a different perspective on history." He continued, "Western and Japanese academia have long ignored Ukraine's unique historical perspective. To correct this perception, I wrote 'Kiev and Russia: A Study' in 2024."
Professor Kuriuzawa emphasized, "'Kiev-Russia' was a state that existed from the 9th century to the early 13th century, centered in present-day Ukraine. The common term 'Kiev-Russia' is incorrect," and emphasized, "The correct name is 'Kiev-Russia.'"
He added, "Russia is sometimes perceived as an aggressor, but it still possesses significant historical assets, including literature, art, and space technology. The literature of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky became the starting point of my scholarship."
Having dedicated himself to the study of medieval Russian history for 60 years, he reflected, "It was only after retirement that I was able to freely pursue my research and achieve greater results." He recently published "A History of Russia in Pictures" (2010), "Reading the Russian Primitive Chronicles" (2015), "The Illustrated Chronicles of Ivan the Terrible" (2019), and "Reflections on Kiev Rus" (2024). He plans to publish "The Letters of Ivan the Terrible and Prince Kurbsky" later this year.
In a Q&A session, Professor Kuriuzawa stated, "I deeply reflect on Japan's past invasions," and praised Korea as a "much more dynamic and honest society than Japan." Regarding Putin's future, he predicted, "If invasion and dictatorship continue, Russia's future will be bleak."
This lecture was made possible by the invitation of his former student, Kim Min-seop, CEO of Sevenline, a Pohang native. Professor Kuriuzawa visited Korea with his wife, concluding a period of profound academic exchange with the citizens of Pohang.
