- Columnist Jeong Seong-tae

The appeal against the first trial ruling in the Daejang-dong development corruption case has been thwarted due to unjustified directives from the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutors' Office leadership. This has led to a fierce backlash from trial prosecutors and growing public skepticism. Amidst this, a public opinion poll has revealed that 45.4% of respondents said "giving up the appeal is inappropriate," 38.8% said "it is appropriate," and 15.8% said they were "unsure."

This survey, commissioned by the Chosun Ilbo and conducted by the polling agency Korea Information Research on May 8th and 9th, surveyed 1,005 men and women aged 18 and older nationwide. The results were released on May 10th. The survey reveals a prevailing public opinion critical of the prosecution's decision to abandon the appeal.

By age, respondents in their 40s responded most favorably, at 51.7%. This was followed by those in their 30s (49.8%) and those aged 18 to 20 (49.5%). Those aged 70 and older saw the situation as "inappropriate" at 43.8%, "appropriate" at 28.7%, and "don't know" at 27.5%. Conversely, those in their 50s saw the situation as "appropriate" at 50.1%, and those in their 60s saw the situation as 46.9%.

By region, Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province saw the highest percentage of "inappropriate" responses at 52.7%. This was followed by Gyeonggi and Incheon at 47.7%, Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province at 47.2%, and Seoul at 46.5%. Conversely, the Chungcheong and Gangwon regions saw the situation as "appropriate" at 47.1%, while Honam and Jeju Province saw the situation at 42.9%.

Meanwhile, in the same survey, 47.5% of respondents said the trial should be resumed during President Lee Jae-myung's term. On the other hand, 45.6% of respondents said it was unnecessary, while 6.9% were undecided. This suggests that the percentage in favor of resuming trials is ahead within the margin of error.

By age, 59.6% of respondents in their 30s believed that resuming trials was necessary. This was followed by 53.1% of those aged 18-20, 48.9% of those in their 40s, 45.4% of those aged 70 and over, 43.3% of those in their 60s, and 38.0% of those in their 50s. Conversely, those in their 50s and 60s who said it was unnecessary accounted for more than half, at 59.0% and 51.7%, respectively.

By region, Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province had the highest percentage of respondents in favor of resuming trials, at 61.1%. This was followed by Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province at 52.8%, Seoul at 49.5%, and Gyeonggi and Incheon at 47.1%. On the other hand, unnecessary responses exceeded half, at 60.1% in Honam and Jeju, and 52.1% in Chungcheong and Gangwon.

Political support for the Democratic Party of Korea was 41.3%, while the People Power Party was 39.0%, showing a close match within the margin of error. Other party support ratings included the Fatherland Reform Party at 3.1%, the Progressive Party at 0.8%, the New Reform Party at 3.0%, other parties at 2.1%, 8.3% with no support, and 2.4% who answered "don't know."

The poll was conducted using mobile phone random digit dialing (RDD) automated response methods, with a response rate of 2.2%. The margin of error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
