세종특별자치시가 국가균형발전 정책 추진의 모범 사례로 인정받았다. 세종시는 20일 울산전시컨벤션센터에서 열린 ‘2025년도 균형발전사업 및 시행계획 우수사례 시상식’에서 지방시대 시행계획 균형발전 부문 산업통상자원부 장관 표창을 수상했다.
이번 시상식은 대통령 직속 지방시대위원회가 주관해 전국 시도별 우수한 지방시대 시행계획 사례를 발굴·공유하기 위해 마련된 행사로, 올해 처음 열렸다. 균형발전 부문 8곳, 분권정책 부문 3곳 등 총 11개 기관이 수상의 영예를 안았다.
세종시는 균형발전 인프라 확충과 지역 간 연계 강화를 통한 자족도시 기반 조성 성과를 인정받았다. 특히 행복도시∼조치원 연결도로 확장으로 도시권 교통서비스를 개선하고, 세종공동캠퍼스 내 대학 개교를 통한 관·산·학·연 혁신 생태계를 구축해 지역균형발전의 실질적 성과를 거뒀다는 평가다.
세종시는 올해 4월 국도 1호선 행복도시~조치원읍 번암교차로 구간 5km를 6~8차로로 확장하고 광역급행버스(BRT) 전용차로를 설치해 도심 접근성과 교통 효율성을 높였다.
또한 지난해 문을 연 세종공동캠퍼스에는 서울대 행정·정책대학원, 한국개발연구원(KDI) 국제정책대학원, 충북대 수의대, 한밭대 인공지능·정보통신기술(AI·ICT) 대학 등이 입주해 세종형 고등·연구 교육벨트를 형성했다.
세종시는 공동캠퍼스 입주 대학의 의견을 반영해 캠퍼스 경유 노선 신설과 정주여건 개선 등 지원책을 마련하는 한편, 향후 충남대 의과대학, 공주대 AI·ICT 대학원, 고려대 행정전문대학원 등 추가 개교를 추진하며 ‘미래형 교육도시 세종’의 위상을 강화할 계획이다.
이용일 세종시 기획조정실장은 “이번 수상은 세종시가 추진해 온 균형발전정책의 실질적 성과를 국가 차원에서 인정받은 것”이라며 “앞으로도 자족기능을 강화하고 실질적 행정수도로 발전할 수 있도록 지속적으로 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편 세종시는 지역균형발전사업 평가에서 3년 연속 전국 시도평가 1위를 기록했으며, 2020년부터 5년 연속 우수사례 기관으로 선정되는 등 지방 균형발전 정책의 선도 지자체로 입지를 확고히 하고 있다.
