고양특례시가 시민들이 자주 찾는 공원과 광장 등 10개 공공장소를 '유해야생동물 먹이주기 금지구역'으로 지정했다고 9일 밝혔다.
이번 조치는 지난해 9월 30일 제정된 「고양시 유해야생동물에 의한 피해 예방 및 관리에 관한 조례」에 근거한 것으로, 비둘기 등 유해야생동물로 인한 악취와 건물 훼손, 질병 전파 등의 피해를 줄이기 위해 마련됐다.

금지구역으로 지정된 곳은 화정역 광장, 일산문화광장, 노래하는 분수대, 마두역 광장, 주엽역 광장, 대화역 광장, 낙민공원, 설촌어린이공원, 강송언덕공원, 원당역 일원 등 시민 이용률이 높은 10개소다.
시는 오는 7월 1일부터 이들 지역에서 비둘기, 까마귀, 까치 등 유해야생동물에게 먹이를 주는 행위에 대해 과태료를 부과할 방침이다.
다만 1월부터 6월까지 6개월간은 계도 기간으로 운영해 시민들의 자발적인 협조를 유도할 계획이다.
과태료는 위반 횟수에 따라 차등 부과된다. 1차 위반 시 20만 원, 2차 위반 시 50만 원, 3차 이상 위반 시에는 최대 100만 원까지 부과된다.
시는 금지구역 현장에 안내 배너 설치를 완료했으며, 계도 기간 동안 시민 인식 개선을 위한 홍보 활동과 현장 점검을 병행할 예정이다.
