에코프로는 이동채 창업주가 지난 7일 충북 청주에 위치한 에코프로비엠 연구동을 찾아 미래 소재 개발 현황을 점검했다고 18일 밝혔다.
이날 이동채 창업주는 연구진과 임직원들에게 “위기 뒤에 찾아올 미래를 착실히 준비해야 한다”며 “배터리 산업의 게임체인저가 될 전고체 배터리 시대를 대비해 소재 개발에 연구 역량을 집중해 달라”고 당부했다.
에코프로비엠 연구동은 에코프로가 청주에 처음 터를 잡은 곳으로, 과거 흡착제 등 친환경 소재와 촉매 연구·개발이 이뤄졌던 의미 있는 공간이다. 이동채 창업주는 “이곳에서 에코프로의 씨앗을 뿌려 글로벌 친환경 기업으로 성장할 수 있었다”며 “우리가 개발하는 전고체 배터리용 양극소재가 에코프로의 제2의 도약을 이끌 수 있도록 끊임없이 도전해야 한다”고 강조했다.
앞서 이동채 창업주는 올해 시무식에서 △기술 리더십 강화 △해외 사업장 고도화 △고객 다변화 △손익경영 강화를 4대 경영방침으로 제시한 바 있다. 그는 “기술로 성장한 에코프로가 현재의 위기를 돌파할 수 있는 해법은 차별화된 연구개발 역량 강화에 있다”며 “기술력 없이는 미래도 없다”고 강조했다.
이동채 창업주는 지난 5일 충북 진천에 위치한 에코프로에이치엔 초평사업장도 방문했다. 초평사업장은 도가니와 도판트 등 이차전지 및 반도체 소재를 생산하는 시설로, 대지면적 약 5만㎡ 규모다.
특히 이 사업장은 배터리 양극재 소성 공정에 필수적인 도가니의 국산화를 추진하고 있어 주목받고 있다. 현재 국내 이차전지 소재 기업들이 도가니를 수입에 의존하고 있는 상황에서, 초평사업장을 통한 국산화가 국내 이차전지 생태계 경쟁력 강화로 이어질 것이란 기대가 나온다.
