임미애 의원은 "지방소멸을 막을 수 있는 골든타임은 바로 지금"이라며 "제도 개혁 없이 통합특별시 등 대형 행정 권력만 만들면 지역 주민 삶이 더 위축될 수 있다"고 강조했다. 이어 "국회 정개특위가 지방 현실을 반영한 선거제도 개편을 신속하게 논의해야 한다"고 밝혔다.
민주당 대구·경북 시도당은 기자회견 직후, 정개특위 논의에 맞춰 여야와 지자체를 상대로 의견서를 제출하고, 법안이나 조문 초안 마련에도 나설 계획이다. 앞으로 토론회와 공청회를 통해 지역 공감대 확산을 추진한다는 방침이다.
